Nailed Baseball Bat or Sledgehammer?

Which of these melee weapons is better overall?

Against Zeds they are both appalling, low swing speed and relative low damage, against other players the nailed bat can cause bleeds but the sledgie can knock down quicker, I would personally go for a knife over all, but between the two I would pick the sledgehammer. You can also mine stones from boulders with it.

But again I usually don't brother with two handed melee weapons, unless it's a splitting or fire axe, and provided I have the free slot to carry them.

Any, up to the machete. Can't be picky these days.

My experience with the Nailed Baseball Bat was that the animation moves the character around lots which can make the zombie go inside your character and start hitting you. And since its pretty low damage if you don´t exactly hit the head, you´re likely better be off with an axe,hatchet or the knife Luca mentioned. In general the knives are a quick way to get rid of that 1 zombie you want dead in a firefight with someone. The bat had me loose health and bleed plenty of times. If i have the chance, i might use it to be some kind of Bad guy or the classic "Survivor" type in DayZ but then I´m likely suicidal and surviving is not an option lol.
