How does flag poles work?

Correct me if I am wrong but, watchtowers and fences despawn in 42 days if not manually "reviewed", what's the point of owning a flag pole? I have no idea what it does other than "refresh" everything within 60m radius. Is it reccomened to own one.
I mean, I own a rather small base designed for one player, is it reccomended to own a flagpole? It kinda sounds useless to me.

As far as I know, flag poles with a flag raised keep all items (not just base building elements like fences, gates etc.) fresh within a radius of 60m. So drop your backpack full of loot, and it should not despawn. You just need to raise the flag back up occasionally.
