Do wolves always howl before attacking?
I was running to the Kamensk military base earlier this morning and had my very first encounter with wolves since they were implemented back in 2016. I have always been terrified of looting places like Tisy, Kamensk, Myshkino e.t.c alone due to the wolf spawn locations. I was running along the road from the campgrounds, and heard a very distinct barking from my left slightly down a hill. There were no howls or anything of that sort; and the wolves just started attacking me. I was in a frenzy and managed to kill all 4 of them with 60 rounds of stanag, but i'm just wondering something.

Do wolves always howl before they attack you? Did I run into a pack that had already attacked someone and that is why there were only 4? I've heard they spawn in packs of 10.

The howl is to let the player know they've triggered the wolf spawn

Thats an awesome dev idea.
So if someone allready spawned them the next person might be unlucky just running into em ^^.

and now i know what hapened that evening which i heard those wolves 2 times but never saw them, i made the right turns to get away i supose. but it stroke some panic and fear +excitement into me.

so does that mean that some other player already triggered them to spawn? I was running and they jumped out and attacked me. I had literally no idea they were there, didn't see em or hear em.

If they're howling it means they haven't seen you yet, but are coming your way.

They also seem to have noticed me through material, since they were down a very steep hill/dropoff where if there was a player instead of the wolves, we likely would have passed eachother without noticing.

A wolves sense of smell would and should be a factor to take into consideration just because you hide or no direct LoS doesn't mean they can't sniff you out.

Not sure whether that's a game function though

For science and testing reasons obviously the next time you hear howling (the first howl) and are quite sure they have no LoS hide and see do they find you? ;)

I used to believe I was ok if I hadn't heard any howling going on until the day I was running down into Krasnostav through a field and running up from the town towards me were 3 wolves, needless to say I headed for the church and quickly slammed the door behind me and had a feed on my canned food until they got bored and left.

The other thing about wolves you need to know is when they're attacking the house you're hold up in, don't stand close to the walls if you're trying to shoot them as they stick thier heads through the walls and bite you!

I also experienced that some wolves run away when they see their fellows being attacked and killed. They will return though and this time they are quite silent!

During my last encounter with the wolves I managed to kill 3 of them, the others ran away. I started to skin the bodies and was busy with my inventory when the other wolves returned without warning. They hit me really hard and it was an intense fight but I could survive.

I really like those dangerous animal encounters!

They will find you.......:p
If you hear them and hide in a house, you can actually hear them sniffing outside the house you are in :p There is no way out, if you wait for them to run away, they can follow you after you are outside :)
