DayZ wont launch -
Thanks for your help.

I have read a lot of posts on similar topics, but they appear to be different to mine. I have tried a lot of the things in the other posts.

Summary;

I have just purchased a second hand gaming desktop PC. Good little rig I think.
Clean install of windows 8.1 on a new hard drive.
Installed Steam, and downloaded Dayz

My problem is that when click PLAY r the desktop shortcut, it says;

"Do I want to allow Steamservice.exe to make changes to my hardrive".

I click yes, and then is say,

"Performing first time set up-
"Installing Microsoft Directx for windows (1 of 1)

and then.....nothing.

Seems to register me having played, i.e., changes the summary info on Dayz to say "Last played - Today"

Background;
I have Steam and DayZ on my other laptop, and Dayz launches well there. However, something is not right on the new PC.

Cheers
Raf

OK, I figured it out. For those with similar problems, this worked for me.

Install the latest version of DirectX through Windows Update

Microsoft DirectX is included as an integral part in Windows operating systems. You can update DirectX by applying the latest service pack or other updates through Windows Update

.

To check your DirectX version, see How to check which version of DirectX is installed.
To check the latest DirectX version that you can install on your operating system, see List of the latest DirectX versions and their supported operating systems.
Manual installation the latest version of DirectX

You can also manually download and apply the following update package that updates DirectX to the latest version. •DirectX 11.2 is included in Windows 8.1, Windows RT and Windows Server 2012 R2.
Note There is no standalone update package for DirectX 11.2. You can only install this DirectX version through Windows Update

in Windows 8.1, Windows RT and Windows Server 2012 R2.
•DirectX 11.1 for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1: •Platform Update for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 (KB2670838)

•DirectX 11.0 for Windows Vista SP2 and Windows Server 2008 SP2:•Update for Windows Vista (KB971512)

•Update for Windows Server 2008 (KB971512)

•Update for Windows Vista for x64-based Systems (KB971512)

•Update for Windows Server 2008 for x64-based Systems (KB971512)

•DirectX 9.0c for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003•Download DirectX 9.0c End-User Runtime

Install DirectX End-User Runtime if your application or game requires an earlier version of DirectX

Some applications and games require DirectX 9. However, your computer includes a more recent version of DirectX. If you install and then run an application or game that requires DirectX 9, you might receive an error message such as "The program can't start because d3dx9_35.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem."

To resolve this issue, go to the following Microsoft website to install DirectX End-User Runtime:
DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer

Note When you run this package, no change is made to your version of DirectX, Direct3D 9, Direct3D 10.x, Direct3D 11.x, DirectInput, DirectSound, DirectPlay, DirectShow, or DirectMusic.
