32 or 64 bit? 32 bit support was stopped in the last couple of game builds. If you run 32 bit you will need to run an earlier version of the game from the beta tab in properties.

If you would care to give some specific information of exactly when you got a black window it might help. For example did you see it loading up before it went black?

Verify game files in properties is a basic first step.

You can also try to run the game in OpenGL from the steam start up options.

Hi @Turtle_tater,

I assure, the game is not broken. It works. I started a brand new game last night on a clean install.

If it's not launching, there are plenty of people here that can help you. We need info from you first though. One of the best tools to diagnose problems is for you to provide a link to your logs.

Assuming you're using the most recent version of KSP (1.10.1) your logs on a Windows PC are located at: %USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\Squad\Kerbal Space Program\Player.log

Can you upload the log in its entirety to dropbox or onedrive or something like that? If you don't have a service, I will send you a link to a folder on my own onedrive that you can use.

We'll get this figured out. One of the things you will find is that the KSP community in general is pretty helpful. :)

@eightiesboi this is everything
eightiesboi Nov 14, 2020 @ 9:56am
Really? That's unusual. Walk me through this then. Let me start with some basic assumptions: correct me if I am wrong.

1. This is a clean install. By "clean", I mean that this is either the first time you have installed KSP or you deleted a previous directory and the reinstalled.
2. You have verified files in Steam (as @GunsForBucks suggested) to make certain they were all downloaded correctly.
3. You have not modded the game. (Yet!)
4. Your computer meets the basic requirements on the Steam Store page for KSP.
5. You are not running any arguments in your launcher from Steam (by putting them in the Steam launch properties setting or by using a custom shortcut).
6. The game has never worked. (Yet!)

Assuming I am correct in all of those, then when you start the game, and it goes "black" what happens next? Do you then force close the game? The first time the game runs, it can take a while to load up and precache all the necessary files. It may seem like it isn't responding. If you do wait, how long do you wait? Does Steam indicate you are in-game? Does the task manager show KSP is running?

The fact that the log stops where it does indicates to me that some process outside the game is terminating it.

Oh, and what is your monitor resolution? The first time you run KSP, it usually defaults to a 1280 x 1024 resolution (IIRC) and windowed, so it is entirely possible that it is actually still working but behind another window.

BTW - I am about to start playing as well, but I will keep an eye on my comments. So when you respond, I should get back to you fairly quickly. :)
Rhett the deer Nov 14, 2020 @ 10:07am
@eightiesboi check, check, check, check, check and check. when i start it is a wight window then 15 seconds later it goes black and another 15 seconds later it goes unresponding. i have waited 1 hour an still nothing. i think something is stoping it because i got vrchat and same thing happens.also i looked in the game files and some were empty. just wondering how long it took you too download it and how large was the game size? my moniter size is 1920 by 1080. i also found this in the log

InvalidOperationException: Steamworks is not initialized.

My install is a bit more than 8GB, but I am also heavily modded. I think it's about 7.3GB, but that's based on my memory.

If VRChat is doing the same thing, then there is definitely something outside the game causing your problem. The log just stopping without a crash points to this as well.

Looking up the notes for your Graphics Card drivers, I see this, "Enhanced Sync may cause a black screen to occur when enabled on some games and system configurations. Any users who may be experiencing issues with Enhanced Sync enabled should disable it as a temporary workaround." It's from the AMD support website. I am using an NVidia card, so I can't tell you where this setting is, but can you try disabling it and see if that changes anything?
Rhett the deer Nov 14, 2020 @ 10:23am
my install said 1.3 gb thats a pretty big red flag
eightiesboi Nov 14, 2020 @ 10:29am
Yeah, it seems like maybe you don't have the whole game installed. My Steam installer claims that the game (unmodded) should be around 4.5GB (wow, I do have a lot of mods!), but that's still 3 times larger than what your install is reporting. One thing that comes to mind: have you checked how much free space you have on your drive? I mean, yeah, it should be obvious, but since the pandemic, I've loaded way more games on my computer than usual and literally had to free up space last night.

Check that, uninstall, reinstall. Check your Steam download to make sure that the whole game is being downloaded.

I'm sorry, at this point, it looks like your problem is outside of the game itself. I may not be able to help. :(

And my log doesn't reference "Steamworks". I also don's see that in the log you posted. Is it new or from something else?

@Turtle_tater, any updates? Did you get it to work? I found references to Steamworks for other games. Apparently, your Steam installation may also be borked. You can check this (once you've redownloaded KSP) by trying to run the game directly outside of Steam. If it works on its own, then KSP is not the problem.

On the other hand, you may have already found a solution by now. 😂
Rhett the deer Nov 15, 2020 @ 4:55pm
nope still broken
eightiesboi Nov 15, 2020 @ 5:31pm
Well, that sucks. Have you tried my recommendations? What were the results?
miklkit Nov 16, 2020 @ 9:57am
When I first got KSP in version 1.8.xx it would not start in Steam. I went into the KSP folder and found a KSP.exe, tried it, and it ran outside of Steam like that. A couple of weeks later it suddenly showed up on Steam and has been fine ever since. Dunno what caused it.
