That's pretty much the case. The demo needs to be of at least a recent version to be representative of the full game. Of course there are really, really old versions available that show more where the game came from than where it is. And I'm one of the game's QA leads, so I'm not sure how official that is. I'll tend to forward stuff onto Badie or Uomocapra if there's something I don't know or can't answer that might need a Squad Response™.
