Stuttering and FPS drops constantly
Was playing online with some friends, my friend was hosting. I have a 144 / 60hz monitor. I have mine set to 60hz, Anyway when im playing. i notice when i leave areas or enter new areas, or even walk around in dungeons or cellars, the FPS goes very low, and i start skipping with frame rate. With my rig it should not be a problem, even if it is a laptop. As i can run games like Far cry 5 on max settings. Is there anything i can do to fix this? The stuttering and frame drops makes me not want to play this anymore.

Windows 10 Pro
Rtx 2070 8gb super <not the garbage max q versions>
i7 10th gen 10875h processor
8 cores 16 processors
32 gigs of ram
2TB gaming Samsung SSD
5.1 ghz

Task Manager > GrimDawn.exe > Assign Affinity > uncheck Core 0

Won't remove *all* fps spiking, some may still occur in very busy spots (Huge mobs/ Boss fights/ lots of showy effects. But should make the game run more smoothly, and reduce spiking.
My laptop with a *garbage 2070 Super Max Q* runs the game smoothly at 144 fps, with only minimal fps drops in really *really* **REALLY** busy spots with lots of flashy screen effects, in all "Ultra", on lower specs than your e-peen machine.

Or buy a new PC with RTX 3090 & AMD Ryzen 9 5950X.

Technical side has it's problems. Can I ask you who replied to you saying stuff like that?

You got scorched for accusing people of being paid by the developers - noone scorched you for saying anything about the game itself. If you can't think your way out of a paper bag and if you don't intend to contribute anything meaningful for the OP's issue then perhaps it would be better if you just not say anything at all.

Any other fixes anyone knows about?

If you tried the above with no success then the only other things to do really are to do an inspection of background processes and shut down anything not necessary to be running while the game is active.

Open the Windows Performance Monitor and monitor the core usage activity while playing to see if any core is bottlenecking.

Keep in mind also that a recent Windows update caused serious performance problems with games, which supposedly has been fixed or will be:

Other than that the only other options to try (beyond basic PC/OS maintenance) would be to verify file integrity of GD, you could try a game reinstall, or various driver reinstalls - or reinstall your C++ Redistributables and DirectX files etc.

Ah, forgot that in your write-up you mentioned multi-player, which can indeed have different issues than single.

In that case the only thing to do really is to possibly attempt forwarding the necessary ports on your router (and possibly try to convince your friends to do so as well) in order to ensure there are no connection issues happening.

It does happen in single player as well, but very rarely, only when it is loading enemies in an area, which i assume is normal, it drops about 10 fps then quickly goes back up. The stuttering though is really annoying me along with the constant frame drops, a computer with my power, even though it is a gaming laptop, should not have these issues. I checked to see if it was throttling my CPU or anything like that, but it was not, my CPU was barely at 55%, so i doubt it is that.

There was a micro stutter issue with nVidia cards that required setting the nVidia settings for VSync to adaptive and disabling Grim Dawn's efforts to manage VSync.

This link seems to tackle most of the usual issues:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Grimdawn/comments/bb9zsq/if_youre_having_issues_with_stuttering_here_are/

But if it doesn't fix yours maybe Google for the same symptoms in other more populous games - what fixes that might also be the fix that works for you. Hope that helps.

When you are checking the CPU you aren't looking at the "overall" usage - you want to watch the individual CORES. What you are looking for is if a "single" core (usually this will be Core 0) is maxing out 100% while the others are not.

Shoudn't 8 cores be enough for a game like this?

I feel like you possibly aren't understanding the difference between a game efficiently using ALL cores and a game running an older game engine that does not spread its tasks efficiently across multiple cores. Grim Dawn belongs in the latter category as it uses the old Titan Quest game engine. They have, of course, updated it drastically over the years for Grim Dawn but in order to have it run on cores evenly, and more efficiently, like other more "modern" engines do would require them to rewrite the engine itself. Which they are in the process of doing actually - and which Grim Dawn 2 may some day in the future run on. Grim Dawn itself, however, will likely never be able to benefit from such a thing.

Again, watch the individual core activity, not the "overall" usage.
