Cannot Beat Adventure Mode
I have tried beating adventure mode several times, but I have not been able to. I keep making it to chapter 5. I wear a dapper vest on chapter 5, to keep my sanity up, since it is perma-dark and a miner hat, so I am not having problems with Charlie or insanity. My problem is- I keep getting annihilated in the massive chess biome. Every time I try going through there I get shot to death by the clockwork bishops. The first time I tried going through there, I was not expecting it to be such a massive horde, so needless to say, I got killed pretty quickly. The next time I went in there I brought a pan flute I crafted in a previous chapter. I played the pan flute right after I entered the biome, I kept going and ran into even more, as expected, so I quickly played it again. I went a bit further and there were even more of them, so I played it again. I went a bit further and unsurprisingly there were even more. I tried playing it a 4th time, but a stupid rook rammed into me and then the bishops shot me to death. I believe the pan flute strategy can work, however it is too finicky to mess with solely relying on that to deal with the chess pieces. Does anyone have any tips on how they got through it? The items I brought with me to the final chapter most recently were the dapper vest, miner hat, pan flute, and sewing kit.

Hey Jesse. Sorry to hear about your bad luck. For the final chapter it is crucial to have certain items to get a chance to live. First off, you NEED a walking cane. This allows you to move faster and have the ability to dodge shots. Miners hat is awesome. Instead of the dapper vest get the mactusk hat. It is the best sanity prevention item. The last item I would recommend is a full stack of honey hams. Honey hams have good healing benefit and great filling up benefit.
Those are my recommended items. Out of your list of items. Don't bring a sewing kit. It really is not worthwhile as they are pretty easy to make and the fifth chapter is the final push to the end. Dapper vest is okay but you cannot wear a back pack while the vest is equiped, which limits your available carry space. Pan flute is handy. From my recommended list, i would probably exchange the hat for the pan flute due to the honey hams also giving you a decent sanity boost.
If you need some more advice just reply to this or send me a friend request and we can communicate live.

Yeah, the problem with the hat you get from Mactusk is that it is a hat. It is good for sanity, but the miner hat is pretty much a must for the final chapter, so I kind of need the dapper vest to maintain sanity, since it is not a head item. Prior to going to the final chapter I use top hats, since I play as Webber I get them pretty easily, as I can get a new one once every 9 days, so long as I do not need the warmth aspect. I did not think of bringing honey ham with me, I can see that being useful. The only time I mess with wearing the dapper vest is on the final chapter, because I do need the extra inventory space. I can see the walking cane being useful for getting passed the chess hordes. Do you know of any way to make a fire staff on adventure mode? I cannot seem to find any red gems and the fire staff is my favorite weapon, because I can just light things on fire, the mobs then run around and light each other one fire, while I just stand back from a safe distance until they die.

The dapper vest is handy, but when you are rushing to that final portal, you will need armor, such as log armor to tank a few hits. Use the dapper vest but the mactusk hat is handy as you only need to wear it when you sanity is around 50 then take it off when your sanity is undercontrol. you do not need sanity increasers until you sanity is at the danger zone of around 25. once sanity is below 25, then shadow creatures start attacking you. still think you should leave the sewing kit especially if you are webber. when exploring, I always have a back pack for the extra space. use you dapper vest when your sanity is getting really low or when you are in your base.

Still, the final chapter is really a speed run. sanity should be the least of your worries since you are rushing through the world as quickly as you can. miners hat is a must :)

Regarding the red gems, dig graves is probably the quickest way, but be warned! digging graves costs sanity also does not gaurentee red gems. another way is waiting for summer and killing fire hounds. another way is to go into the caves and mine cave rocks. another, which is probably the worst, is to open tumble weeds in the desert. sometimes when you are lucky and exploring, there will be a fire staff amongst sleeping fire hounds. when picking up the staff the hounds will wake up and attack you. One final way is to find the savana in the world with lots of beefalo and there can sometimes be a wooden wall maze. in the middle of the maze is a free fire staff. be warned, do not open the chest by the maze until you have collected the stuff from the middle of the maze. there is a chance that the chest sets itself on fire and burns everything.

I really wish the devs would have made it where the backpack does not take up your chest slot. I am one of the few people that actually uses non-backpack chest gear, but it is a pain at times. Usually I rely on Chester for my extra inventory space, but I have had no luck of finding it on the final chapter, because like you said, it is a speed run. That is good to know that you can find red gems on the adventure mode. I knew how to find them for sandbox mode, but I forgot you can get them from grave digging. I may try to craft a fire staff before I reach the final chapter. I have been able to find a fire staff on adventure mode before, but I ended up getting killed by something prior to reaching the final area. Sorry for the late response, for a while I could not get logged into my Steam account for whatever reason. I was not sure if the log suit would cut it for the massive clockwork enemies or not. I thought about trying to get some night armor to bring with me, but I was not sure how well that would go because of its rapid sanity decrease, while equipped. I will try to bring with me a walking cane and either the night armor or the log suit, so I can hopefully not get annihilated in that one spot with the copious amounts of clockworks. I actually beat the adventure mode on my Wii U version of the game, but not on the Switch one. I am not sure if on the Wii U they had the massive clockwork biome, but if they did, I am not sure how I got passed it the first time. The Switch version has Shipwrecked, so I want to be able to get Maxwell, because he and Webber are my two favorite characters, but because of how campy Webber is he's not really the greatest option for Shipwrecked. I tried using the chef character, but his pickiness was too much of a pita. So, I was hoping to use Maxwell to unlock Wilbur and Woodlegs, since I have heard Woodlegs is a pretty good character for Shipwrecked.

I don't recall any chess biomes and chess hordes in final Darkness chapter besides near maxwell portal.

As for tips. I disagree that walking cane is cruicial. More important it having food and sanity restoring supplies, miner hat and fireflies to refuel miner hat, alternative you can bring web and craft bug net to catch fireflies in your way

I think, what you should have done is crafted log suit and always kept it on to be safe for any surprises or hard obstacles

For sanity: stack of jerky would be best for both hunger, sanity and health. If it's too difficult then try bring stack of green or blue mushrooms and cook when you need to restore sanity.
If food is more important for you than sanity then always pick flowers whenever you see them to keep sanity in check and use shovel to dig up mushrooms. You will get 2 from digging them out instead 1 when picking them up

Keep in mind that there will be obelisk blockade that would require low or high sanity in order pass. (One of reasons why I find Darkness and King of WInter to be the hardest, due to those stupid obelisks)

For clockwork situation - try lure horse or rock away from the rest to 1vs1, but you need to lure far enough so other clockworks didn't see you. And then finish bishops. You could also try use rock to destroy his own clockwork friends.

Thank you for the tips. I never really messed with using jerky on the adventure mode. I always just used monster jerky for the sandbox mode, so I could have longer lasting monster meat for Webber and less dangerous monster meat for other characters. I did not know that regular jerky would restore sanity. It is bizarre that I keep running into that massive chess biome, but I do recall on the Wii U version, not having to deal with that. Maybe I am just getting bad luck with the seed for the final chapter, giving me the massive chess biome. I kid you not when I say there was probably at least 50 clockwork monsters. It just kept going and going. I was able to put some of them to sleep using the pan flute, but eventually I just got swarmed and could not use it, because I kept getting hit. The log suit may be enough to get me passed them, it is worth a shot. I will probably not bring one with me, because they are fairly easy to craft. I will just make it shortly after I start each chapter. The bug net is pretty useful for being able to refuel miner helmets. Since Webber gets silk pretty easily, bringing a massive stack of silk with me, should not be too difficult. I do usually use the rook to friendly fire the other clockworks. In the massive chess biome, there were too many bishops though. They shot me to death in a matter of seconds.

I just got that a massive chess biome today in Darkness chapter! With ocassional rocky biomes. The entrance to biome was heavily guarded in narrow bridge. Oh boy that was indeed a very difficult area! I was looking at edges of my flashlight light and keeping ears on for any clockworks to avoid any contact while moving my way through there very slowly like on land mine field . Wearing headphones can actualy help determine from which direction sound is comming

I can see why you struggling in there. Never go there with out armour and pray RNG for clockworks placement would not screw you there.

I never thought about wearing headphones to make it easier to hear where they are coming from. And okay, I will definitely make sure to bring armor the next time I attempt it. I think the devs could have left without that part in Darkness. It would be hard enough without it. It's about like Binding of Isaac having curses, when the game would be hard enough without it.

I would not say to bring armour from previous chapter, but rather craft it when you get to Darkness chapter.

Yeah, that is probably a better idea.

i would recomend playing as wx he gets a lot of gears from the chess biome and i do not need dapper vest or tamoshanter bacause the gears increase my sanity
