Don't Starve

Files Deleted?
Let me start by making something clear. I'm in a bad position in my life, and I've poured everything into games to get my mind off things. I have a save file that I just cherish, and I've gotten to I believe almost 200 days, and when I launched the game today all of my files were gone.
I was on offline mode when I tried to launch it. My friend told me he thought that was the reason, and told me to go online, so I did. They were still gone. I tried verifying cache, and that didn't help me. So I tried doing research on what could be wrong, and I found the post by Wade, saying:

Hey guys,

I'm sorry, but this is a problem with Steam Cloud that we're going back and forth with Valve on. It has to do with the way that the files are saved. The recommended solution is to disable Steam Cloud in the "settings.ini" file for the game. This will cause the save files to be placed in your documents folder in the future. For existing save games, you will have to copy them from the Userdata folder over to the new save location.

DISABLING STEAM CLOUD:
Some people have reported save/load issues with Steam Cloud. We have added a workaround that will cause the game to save its files in your documents directory instead. To activate this mode,
add the following two lines to your "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\dont_starve\settings.ini" file:

[STEAM]
DISABLECLOUD = true

So first I tried putting that in the .ini file, saving it, and closing it. Launched it again. Nothing changed. Then I found where my saves should have been -- which they were -- and copied them to the other location. Launched the game again, and got nothing.

What do I do? I can't stress enough how badly I need to access my file again. I have it, but I can't access it. My game keeps telling me I have nothing.

Bump, I disabled and reenabled Cloud synch, it showed it downloading something, so I got really hopeful and launched the game again. But nothing changed, the files are still gone.
If anyone has any suggestions, please give them.

Sorry to hear you are having such a rough time but if you are in such a rough position in life maybe you should put more time into fixing that problem instead of playing this game so much? Unless of course it's something you have no control over in which case I totally understand wanting to immerse yourself in a game.

Either way, good luck and I hope you can recover your game world!

Yeah, it's one of those situations where there's literally nothing else I can do, so I play games to distract myself.
This really does suck. I wonder if I should just submit a ticket. But I either never get answers to my tickets, or I get really unhelpful replies.

Klei are very good at answering. Steam are kind of well....rubbish. They take ages. I highly recommend mailing klei directly. Just go to their official forum.

When did the save file work last time? From what I can read from Don't Starve news, I understand that there has been an update a few days ago (21st if I'm not entirely incorrect though I don't have the game currently installed).

Unless you have explicitly disabled updates in Don't Starve or simply stayed offline (in Steam), the game will have updated some time ago. This may or may not break the save files.

In that case it would in principle be possible to reload an older, not updated build of the game, if that were available somewhere. Unfortunately I do not know if that is possible in Steam unless specifically implemented by the developer.

Then again this might be a totally different scenario your save file is experiencing. In that case nothing I said will have any matter: my apologies for a post-in-vain.

Unfortunately I can only provide potential understanding for this specific problem and no true solution. Hopefully you'll find a solution to both your gaming-related problems and the IRL ones, or at least one of those.

You might try, as a last resort, the system restore function of your Windows OS. No guarantees it will restore those files, but you can always revert.

It was just working last night. I played for a few hours and then I quit playing and went to bed. When I woke up, my internet was acting stupid, so I just went into offline mode and tried to launch it, and all my saves were gone.

Okay, nevermind then. :/ Good luck.
