Don't Starve

Don't Starve

What is the way don't starve is meant to be played?
Started playing in beta and stopped for a while. At first I tried to learn about everything without spoiling the most advanced items and such, but later realized that I simply can't keep up with the enormous amount of content coming in.

So based on your opinions and experiences, what is the way don't starve was meant to be played? Should I completely ignore don't starve wiki and just survive as long as possible just by figuring the new content myself? Or should I keep visiting don't starve wiki often, study mechanics, recipes, items and then play it? Just for reference I've already survived like 30 days or so on one of my attempts so I am only talking about the complex new content such as caves that I am even afraid to go into without reading the wiki.

I'm at the point where I know how to survive indefinately. My new way to play is to take each character through the teleportato and bring each of their unique items with them so at the end I have a character with all the unique items to play with.

I think avoiding the wiki will probably turn out to be more fun, but it's up to you and your own preference. I think it would be frustrating for me to die to some monster because I decided to poke it with a stick to see what it would do, just because that is the only way you can figure out what the hell it does or drops.

i went far without the wiki it might have taken longer but it was alot of fun and learning on my own made it all the better

I think you should check out the wiki for the more menial stuff, but try and figure out alot of it as well.

Whatever gives YOU the most enjoyment when you play, that's how you should play. :)

Well the thing is. I am not sure which way WILL give me most enjoyment, that's why I am asking others.

The correct way to play a game like this is however you want to play it. Never let other people determine your playstyle, you'll be happier for it.

It can be fun reading the wiki too. I actually watched Sips alot, and that is what convinced me to play Don't Starve. I knew the basics, because Sips was no pro, but I read the wiki and I still find it fun.

Well I mean how developer meant it to be played. New contet is very complex so I am wondering if that's meant to be learn just by playing,

I would imagine the developers would give you the same answer I gave you. :)

The wiki serves a good purpose now and again.

It's good to know for example the relative effectiveness of melee weapons. It's not always apparent which does more damage.

Recipes are tedious to learn and some things you would not even guess could go in a crock pot..

The use of the different mushrooms (cooked vs. raw) is confusing even with the wiki.

I am not hesitant to use the wiki if I get stuck or am not sure of something. I have said before evven asking questions here is comparable to wiki use because many people answer with wiki sourced material.

So, really whatever gets you through the night is OK by me. : )

For me, if a game has a wiki that reveals some hidden mechanics, it will ruin the game for me. This happened with Game Dev Tycoon and also partly with Don't Starve. Myself, I like figuring the things out myself and not always knowing what will happen. If someone already figured it out and I get a habit of reading about it, it becomes almost pointless to play myself. Spoilers matter (to me, that is).

Especially in an exploration game like this, IMO it is much more fun trying to figure out things by myself. Then again, I do understand some people enjoy reading through wikis and guides and then using this knowledge in the game. To me it's very much like cheating (in a survival/exploration game like this).

All in all, the responses here are the way to go: play like you would enjoy a game like this. Build a fort. Explore the wicked caves. Try to survive 365 days in a row. Die to killer bees in the darkness of winter. Laugh ironically for your last breath.

Hopefully someone describes a playstyle that would fit you.
