Safe and living healthy. See the two entrances/exits? As soon as a hound attack comes I either run up and left to pigs during the day, or down and right to a 20-30 beefalo herd during the night.
Stuff doesn't attack you that often in this game unless you go provoke it. The only things that actually seek you out are hounds, shadows (at 30 or less sanity only), and deerclops. You can read up on the wiki how to deal with each of those.
Everything else will leave you alone unless you get really close to its spawn point or do something specific to provoke it.
There is no way to close a door or anything like that. All of those things can get to you behind walls.
The best way to deal with problems like this is to make a field of traps close to your base, but separate from it enough that fires there won't ignite your stuff.
It can be if you go into adventure mode. Its not the hardest thing ever though if you stay in the starting world.
what you don't realize is that those stone walls will not actually defend you. the enemy hounds and other stuff will break down those walls if it is the shortest path to you. they won't kindly use the entrance you've made.
i would not waste precious stone early on in your game on these walls. they are actually just for cosmetic purposes, like carpeting. something i wouldn''t craft until the end.
what i do is build a large group of tooth traps around a fireplace. this trap should be near your base, but far enough away from anything that could get burned. this is because the summer hounds explode into fire when they die. something lightning rods will not prevent from your entire base turning into flames.
so i have my main base with everything (farms, crockpots, drying racks, tents, meat effigy, bee boxes, grass, berry bushes, twigs, storage chests, etc)
then off to the left a screen or so away i have a 2nd fireplace surrounded by traps for hounds, treeguards, etc. making sure nothing is near the traps that could catch fire and spread.
i also have a 2nd group of tooth traps to the other side of my base just incase i am out that way when hounds approach. you'll find this important if you ever have to kill some treeguards and then a hound attack happens to come along during this tree fight where all your traps need to be reset.
lastly, if you want to gather a lot of hound's teeth to make these traps nice and large (each of mine has like 75 traps)... find the walrus camp. set up a fireplace near there. every winter morning there will be some winter hounds that respawn there. winter hounds drop like 2 teeth each. place some tooth traps near there and you wil start amassing a large surplus of teeth.
all of this means you'll need a ton of grass for rope for the traps. i have a grass farm in my base with about 140 grass. a full chest of rope, and a full chest of normal grass. overkill. :)
it is also useful to try to make a wall between your pig houses and your traps, because pigs are too stupid to avoid the traps.
