Traps: Should I bother with bait?

I find myself starving to death within the first four to five days and attempt to farm rabbit holes, but as I wait I find that the baited traps arn't catching any quicker, should I just forgo putting seeds & berries in the traps and eat them instead?

If you want to catch rabbits, put a carrot as bait, it will take seconds and you won't have a problem with food. And before you put trap look around if there are any rabbits, because sometimes holes are for decoration :)
Seeds are good for birds, but don't even bother catching them in the beginning without spider web, because 9 times out of 10 you will only waste seeds. Same with berries. Just eat them.
Also, cook everything.

Just put your traps on top of or right next to the rabit hole. You can do this to several holes. Rabbits get caught in the trap as soon as they come out of the hole (or when they run to the hole).

As far as I know...early game traps only catch rabbits, with carrots...nothing else seems to work.

Well I just lay the trap by the hole and kite / push the rabbit into the trap lol. Works without a carrot.

if you're in a grassland where there are a lot of rabbit holes, you usually don't need bait.

if you're really pressed for food, as Altxexit pointed out, kiting them into the traps works very well.

I've had really great results with putting the traps RIGHT on top of the holes. Make 6-7 traps, lay them out (one per hole) and check every night. I usually pull at least 4-5 rabbits this way. Getting the placement right can take some practice, but if you get good you can trap them as they come out of the holes, no need for bait.
