you need to create a special trap for birds.
Edit. On a more careful look I noticed that the description of the second trap let you know this. I did't notice that at first, I don't check description of items that are still locked. I just played about 20 min and came here looking for help because I was already stuck with the trap not catching birds... I guess I have not much patience today.
Baiting rabbit traps isnt worth it anyway.
A berries hunger value is 12.5
A carrots hunger value is 12.5
A morsels value is 12.5
No matter what you give up it will be the same as what is returned.
Your better off just putting the trap over the hole.
I may be on the verge of going insane but im not there yet!
Set them up like the traps are the tips of a plus(+) symbol, with the center being the rabbit hole. Go out and do other things.
Come back later.
Collect 2-4 rabbits.
REPEAT.
This can really eat through a small grass and stick supply, especially if you find a solid patch of rabbit holes.
Combine with drying rake and you have a tasty treat for the road!
Or put a carrot some distance from the trap, then pick up the loot and the carrot.
