Don't Starve

Don't Starve

Why the home grown tall birds turn wild?
After a long time, i finally managed to hatch a tall bird egg. I was so amazed that i had a small bird following me and attacking things with me! He saw me as his mother and i kept feeding him with seeds and berrys (altough i was not sure if it was necessary, i liked it).

He died in the next hound attack and turned into a morsel. I cound't bring myself to eat it. I had loved him so much!

I decided to hatch another egg, and this time i would protect it with my life! I was already thinking about the adventures we would have when he was a fully grown and powerfull adult Tall Bird! How we would hunt down every spider egg and spider queen, eliminate the clockwork beasts, destroy the Hounds of Hell, crush the world under my sandals (and under his chicken leg).

So next time the hound attack started, i equipped myself with log suit and football helmet and wouldnt run from the hounds, would take them head on, so they wouldnt turn on the poor frail smallbird.

Great, he survived!

And then, after long days, he become an adult Tall Bird and for my awe and dismal, the bird i dedicated so much to raise and protected, turned wild and attacked me! I had no choice but to put him down.

Long story short, why can't the fully grown tall birds that we raise become "domestic" ones and stay loyal to us? Following us and attacking things together, just like the small birds? Aren't we his mother, after all? Feeding and caring for him?

I think it would be a amazing new thing to work and to aim for in the game. I don't think it would be overpowered, since it is so hard to fully raise a fragile small bird! And if we can have a pig entourage easily, why can't we have a domestic, home grown, Tall Bird entourage?

Loved reading your feel and experience about it. Although I think they way it is now is fine. As you said we already have Pig friends and chester, I don't think Don't Starve needs more 'pets'. As much I get it, Tallbirds are wild animals, and the turning against you upon adult age represents this perfectly. Pretty much the same idea as raising a lion, they are cute as cubs but I wouldn't any adult one.

This is basicly just what happens in real life,As for mothers eventually shun/leave there young once they reach a certain age so they can make more young.

Just a thought, if you care for you personal Tallbird so much I guess it's possible to mod their level of agressiveness. So they never attack the player unless you attack them first like pigs. I guess this would fix it for you.

Try making a cage and lead the full grown tallbird in. That way you have it and dont have to kill it. and maybe more tallbirds later :P

Thanks for the replys!

I can surely see how the "wild nature" of the Tallbird could overcome its affection for me. It makes sense, but i thought it was so frustrating to see it become hostile after so many days of self sacrifice to raise it.

I am not an expert or anything, but there are cases of grown lions and tigers that became reasonable domesticated, right?

And it does make sense that it stops following you after he is fully grow, just like pokemonprime said. It is the natural order of the things.

Maybe if he just stopped following you and not being hostile would be a nice change. Just like the mod for agressiveness, but without the mod and this would change only the behavior of the domesticated tall birds, not the wild ones. After all, you just leave your mother house, you don't start to hate her (at least, not most of the time)!
