Help with winter!!!
So I've Finally got far enough into the game to start my first winter....However, It took about 10 days to find a suitable base camp, so I entered in wholly unprepared, with only about 40 carrots and no warming cloths (thankfully we have the Heat stone now, not great, but works).

So, I wanted to ask, What's my best option? Do berry bushes work during winter? There are a good number of Beefalo north of me, but far to main for me to attack safely. What can I do!!!

P.S. I'm guessing with my level of experience, if the Deerclops finds me, Run? (>_< I have trouble against Spiders! Bwahahah).

Yes berries do grow during winter, but if you dig them up don't plant them too close together. I planted about 25 close-ish together and learnt the hard way that lightning can really ruin your day.

As for the clothes, all I can suggest is that you can set up a fire pit/camp fire near the beefalo and shave them (at night!) to make yourself a hat. Just beware of Beefalo mating season.

And yes, if the Deerclops comes I highly suggest you run away. :p

Thanks! I was able to get a Beefalo Hat with that (as well at the Winter hat). I've heard that it's a good stratagy to use the Beefalo hat during mating season to get them to kill birds. think that will help me? how effective is it?

I don't think the Beefalo hat helps get them to kill the birds. They'll kill the birds on their own if they land close enough during mating season because everything makes them angry, the hat will let you run in and collect those tasty morsels without them attacking you though, so if their mating season happens to fall in winter then you're sorted :)

>_< can't get them to kill more than 2-3 birds a day lol, oh well, nice trick to use when it is mating Season.
Anyway, I'm guessing player planted berry bushes (or any plant for that matter) do not work during Winter? It's had plenty of time and nothing.

When you plant berry bushes or grass, you have to fertilize them with poop or rot. I prefer to use poop for the bushes and rot for the grass. I read somewhere that rot has 1/4 the strength of poop but the grass only needs 1 rot, so that saves the poop for other projects.

A good idea could be to keep a tree guard around and when a deerclops comes trick it into using its area attack next to the tree guard then you can sit back and watch them fight. Make sure the Treeguard is passified with saplings first though.

the beefalo hat makes you warmer killing the kolelephant you can use its tusk and silk to make some clothes to keep you warm and when the deerclops comes stay away from it your sanity will go very low and it is strong he appears later in winter

if the deerclops just wants to kill you find some beefalo and pigmen for it to kill them and hope for the best that it doesnt come back for you and when summer comes the deerclops despawns

For restoring sanity in winter (or any other season), you can craft the gentleman's hat(Top Hat). It will restores sanity and/or create a couple of Drying Racks (I like to create at least 5) and get some dry meat.

Each dry meat restores 10 sanity. And for cold, the suggestions giving in this thread are great plus dont forget the new Dress item Rabbit Earmuffs if you cant get the Beefalo Hat in time, I survive my first winter with the Earmuffs and the Heat Stone alone... I dont recommend it though.

If you can kill the Treeguard without him hitting you, its the same thing with the Deerclops. Force him into the attack animation, retreat then go back and hit him for a couple of times, rinse and repeat.

Yes.

Also i suggest setting up camp close to rabbits holes so you can catch them as a winter food resurce.
Then dry the meat or if you find barries/monster meat then make kebabs. It helps a lot more with your hunger and restores sanity aswell.

Oh yeah and with spiders just set up traps next to there home.
