Don't Starve

Don't Starve

Dealing with limited inventory space?
I just... "finished," my first run of the game and ended on Day 21. It's fun and I think I have the general hang of it (I technically didn't starve), but I had a lot of trouble holding all of the resources necessary to sustain myself. Even with just building materials, tools and food, it became such an issue that it hamstrung my attempts at establishing a base fast enough for Winter -- let alone managing more unique items (e.g. Red Gem, Hound's Tooth, Fairy Ring), which I often left somewhere on the ground.

While I did use Chester and a Backpack last time (almost exclusively), I would greatly appreciate some advice regarding what to prioritize/carry with you assuming you only have Chester (since I'll likely need to forsake the Backpack in favor of a Dapper Vest in Winter). I wasn't quick enough to set up Crock Pots, Drying Racks or even Chests last run, so I figure they're key to this... but if there are any other tips beyond "use those," I'd like to be aware of them before I start my next run.

Thanks much in advance.

My guide goes through prioritising important resources in relative detail. Take a look.

Do note , there are mods that increase the bag size and mods that stack anything up to 99 in one slot.

I'm not interested in mods or custom worlds just yet, but thank you for the heads up.

J20: I don't think you went into all that much detail, but I did find this line to be of use: "Prioritize Berries, Carrots, Seeds, Twigs, Grass, and Flint. Always make sure you carry maxed out supplies of Twigs, Grass and Logs" -- that seems to be enough, but perhaps offer something more pointed than a link to your guide if there's more to it than that? Thanks again.

A tangent: I just went about counting out the necessary base materials for what I think would be a good starting base: 1 Fire Pit, 1 Backpack, 1 Science Machine, 1 Alchemy Engine, 1 Lightning Rod, 4 Chests, 4 Drying Racks, 3 Crock Pots and 8 Improved Farms.

It came out to:
120 Grass,
94 Rocks,
70 Logs,
34 Twigs,
48 Manure,
30 Charcoal, and
10 Gold Nuggets
Seeds and the like were not included. I figure I'll need more Grass, Twigs, Flint (tools) and Manure (bush fertilizer) than this count, but it does give me a more concrete ballpark figure for what to prioritize in early game.

Beyond that, I think I'll get into the habit of building Fire Pits near locations where I'm forced to drop something. At least then, I'll have a marker on the map that lets me know where I left it.

If there's more to know, feel free to say so. I'd be glad to hear it.

When I mean relative detail, I mean to the point, all you need, end of, bobs your uncle. There is nothing to it that that. Max out on Gold as well. Gold is very important to get a base going. So when you see a large bolder with gold veins, start mining it. There isn't any need to pick up the nitre so leave that, come back to it later on. Those are your main resources, what I have given you. The rest will be stored in chests. I have never had any issues with storage space.

Remember the triple P rule. Prioritise, Prioritise, Prioritise. There is nothing to it. I only ever build one fire pit and that will then become my main base. Take a look;

Most important part from begining - find a gold, by the way you should collet grass, twigs, flint, stones and logs (1 stack is enough). Also collect flowers (to make a headgear), berries and carrots. All other just ignore or drop near a road to collect later (ofc you can bring something in empty slots). After you find at last 12 nuggets of gold (science machine, alch. machine, lighting rod, ice box) you can set a camp. I'm usually set it in place near rabbits (infinite meat) and beefalo (protection from hounds and wool gathering), better with a road. Now you can make some chests and drop all less important things near a camp or in chests. First things to make - an armor, a spear, and crock pots with cooked meat balls (food do not rot when stand on pots). Minimum is done.
After this I usually set a traps and start to collect alive rabbits for winter, make a forest (if it's too far), bunch of barry bushes and bee boxes, collect web for winter suit (order is not necessary). Close to day 20, hunt some beefalo for a horn (you don't need to hunt them for wool, you can shave them at night) and koalefant for a trunk. Is really recomended to find at last 1 gear for Ice Box (I don't like gravedigging so I looking for chess monsters). Also useful to get some stacks of grass (because is not growing in the winter). After first winter you're ready to do anything you want.

Just a follow-up if anyone's interested in how I've coped with inventory space.

I'm on Day 40 with just a Backpack (no Chester or Krampus' Sack yet). My current typical inventory is: Axe, Pickaxe, Shovel, Spear, Lighter; two stacks of Grass and Twigs; one stack of Flint, Logs, Boards, Rocks, Meatballs and Small Jerky. It comes out to 14+1 "dedicated" slots, which leaves me with ≥9 slots to work with.

I'm sure it can be optimized further (don't need two stacks of Twigs and Grass), but even this is satisfactory. Thanks much for the advice.

It looks like you're pretty well covered.

Why do you carry so much junk? When are you seriously going to need 40 grass? Why boards? Are you building signs out there?

My usual loadout is Armour + Weapon already equipped with Eye Bone, Miner Hat, Seeds and two of the same crockpot item in inventory. The seeds only because you're guaranteed to come across them while walking around so you'll have a stack anyway. Anything more than that should be dictated by what you're going to be doing on that day. If you're going mining, take a bunch of pickaxes or a single gold pick. If you're fogbreaking, take one campfire and two more stacks of food. If you're trapping rabbits, take two cages.
You don't need a shovel and an axe when you're mining.

Also, Protips;
When you find Chester, keep a spare Log Armour and good weapon for when you're caught offguard by stuff like Hounds. If you really need the space, you could use a backpack and just switch between it and the armour whenever you expect to fight.

If you build a campfire and then right-click to cancel, it'll still be built, just not placed. You can then return to the build menu whenever you want to place your free emergency campfire without the ingredients taking up space.

As to J20's guide up above, why don't you list flowers as priority? You should be collecting a single full stack of 40 flowers while you're initially fogbreaking so by the time you've set up base, you have 40 petals to offer to pigs for manure to build farms or 40 rot to fertilize berry bushes.

inventory space may be a problem but if you have played for a while and understand the game you can take the few things you need, like going into adventure mode in your world.

I don't bother carrying a lot of tools around with me. I keep some twigs and flint and make them as necessary. If I come across rocks I want to mine then I'll keep at it until I've used up a couple picks and then move on. I almost never carry an axe once I've set up my base and established a nearby pig village. I plant a forest near the pigs and hire them (with meat of some sort) to chop most of my wood for me. This also has them take care of any treeguards that pop up.
