J20: I don't think you went into all that much detail, but I did find this line to be of use: "Prioritize Berries, Carrots, Seeds, Twigs, Grass, and Flint. Always make sure you carry maxed out supplies of Twigs, Grass and Logs" -- that seems to be enough, but perhaps offer something more pointed than a link to your guide if there's more to it than that? Thanks again.
A tangent: I just went about counting out the necessary base materials for what I think would be a good starting base: 1 Fire Pit, 1 Backpack, 1 Science Machine, 1 Alchemy Engine, 1 Lightning Rod, 4 Chests, 4 Drying Racks, 3 Crock Pots and 8 Improved Farms.
It came out to:
120 Grass,
94 Rocks,
70 Logs,
34 Twigs,
48 Manure,
30 Charcoal, and
10 Gold Nuggets
Seeds and the like were not included. I figure I'll need more Grass, Twigs, Flint (tools) and Manure (bush fertilizer) than this count, but it does give me a more concrete ballpark figure for what to prioritize in early game.
Beyond that, I think I'll get into the habit of building Fire Pits near locations where I'm forced to drop something. At least then, I'll have a marker on the map that lets me know where I left it.
If there's more to know, feel free to say so. I'd be glad to hear it.
Remember the triple P rule. Prioritise, Prioritise, Prioritise. There is nothing to it. I only ever build one fire pit and that will then become my main base. Take a look;

After this I usually set a traps and start to collect alive rabbits for winter, make a forest (if it's too far), bunch of barry bushes and bee boxes, collect web for winter suit (order is not necessary). Close to day 20, hunt some beefalo for a horn (you don't need to hunt them for wool, you can shave them at night) and koalefant for a trunk. Is really recomended to find at last 1 gear for Ice Box (I don't like gravedigging so I looking for chess monsters). Also useful to get some stacks of grass (because is not growing in the winter). After first winter you're ready to do anything you want.
I'm on Day 40 with just a Backpack (no Chester or Krampus' Sack yet). My current typical inventory is: Axe, Pickaxe, Shovel, Spear, Lighter; two stacks of Grass and Twigs; one stack of Flint, Logs, Boards, Rocks, Meatballs and Small Jerky. It comes out to 14+1 "dedicated" slots, which leaves me with ≥9 slots to work with.
I'm sure it can be optimized further (don't need two stacks of Twigs and Grass), but even this is satisfactory. Thanks much for the advice.
My usual loadout is Armour + Weapon already equipped with Eye Bone, Miner Hat, Seeds and two of the same crockpot item in inventory. The seeds only because you're guaranteed to come across them while walking around so you'll have a stack anyway. Anything more than that should be dictated by what you're going to be doing on that day. If you're going mining, take a bunch of pickaxes or a single gold pick. If you're fogbreaking, take one campfire and two more stacks of food. If you're trapping rabbits, take two cages.
You don't need a shovel and an axe when you're mining.
Also, Protips;
When you find Chester, keep a spare Log Armour and good weapon for when you're caught offguard by stuff like Hounds. If you really need the space, you could use a backpack and just switch between it and the armour whenever you expect to fight.
If you build a campfire and then right-click to cancel, it'll still be built, just not placed. You can then return to the build menu whenever you want to place your free emergency campfire without the ingredients taking up space.
As to J20's guide up above, why don't you list flowers as priority? You should be collecting a single full stack of 40 flowers while you're initially fogbreaking so by the time you've set up base, you have 40 petals to offer to pigs for manure to build farms or 40 rot to fertilize berry bushes.
