It doesn't. You're free to just dump stuff on the ground, in fact I strongly suggest you leave a set of log armour, a weapon and some healing salves sitting on the ground near your firepit in case you need to pick up some stuff right away and don't have time for fiddling around in chests.

It can become an issue though. Later on in worlds you'll find it hard to walk around the place without finding piles of rot everywhere from where animals have previously killed each other and dropped meat.

If you want to dispose of more 'permanent' items (stuff that can't be burnt into ashes or left to rot), you'll need to find a Lureplant. They can eat everything except certain special items.

Ash despawns pretty fast though.

I dont think any items other then ashed despawn....But theres a chance they will not be there in the future, mainly due to fires,lightning,krampus....

No. But food may be eaten. Especially if there are pigs near by to it. If lure plants spawn in the place where you drop stuff then you are kind of messed. Best you experiment and see for yourself.

nothing really despawns, except for ash. Meat and other food will either be eaten or go bad. But it you drop an axe, it'll stay there forever.

I've not been in the habit of leaving items on the ground; Backpack + Chester + Base Chests often suffice. A panic set of combat gear sounded nice until I remembered that Lure Plants exist, although you can play around that with proper flooring... might be worth considering for respawn outposts. I see its uses, but in general enemy behavior and space limitations can be problematic for a habitual litterbug.

true i was really just ask because in the beginning you get filled up quicky so being able to drop some stuff and not worry about it disappearing is nice
