So the DLC is the main game but with more stuFF?
A lot more stuff. But as stated, it is a lot harder. You could buy the bundle, and then start with a world without RoG enabled. Then once you get a feel for the game, make a new world with RoG enabled. They even have the option to turn it off and on before you make a new world :) Have fun!
More pain in the but stuff rather then stuff that helps.
In spring rabbit holes are collapsed so you have to rely on whatever grows or tracking koalefants. Which makes gathering food a colossal pain if this is your starter Season.
Also you cant build bee boxes in spring because all bees are red during this season.
In summer it is now possible to overheat so you need to find ways to stay cool.
You still have Winter to deal with where you have to stay warm and fed.
and Not just deerclops during winter. You have to deal with a giant for each season.
So yeah if its your first run playing Vanilla is the better way to get some practice.
RoG adds more fun mechanics, more mobs, more characters and a few more challenges.
Well, i've put a few hours into the Vanilla game now and I have a basic enough knowledge of survival and stuFF so I will now be putting RoG on. I literally just died on the game so now is the perfect time for RoG :P
He stated he knew nothing about the game at all, so it would be best to start without RoG for a newcomer.
It's not hard for someone who knows what dont starve is and how to play it, but as the OP stated he knew nothing about the game at all. I don't think he would like horrible tree monsters trying to murder him with their roots while their babies bum rush him. It's a lot nicer to learn the actual game without RoG <3
I use RoG pretty much exclusively now, but when I was just starting out on Don't Starve, the RoG features were a complete nightmare. Constant rain + sanity drain + everything in inventory is distractingly soaked through; periodic clockwork bishops murdering me every time I go exploring at night using a torch; every live animal I catch starves before I can figure out how to craft anything with it (beeboxes and prestihatitators are nigh uncraftable for beginners in RoG); and the more extensive variety of various biomes makes the maps much more challenging than the much simpler vanilla random-generated worlds.
Worst bit for me is the chance of accidentally tracking a Varg when hunting Koalafant -- that was my main source of food in vanilla Don't Starve and now I have learned much easier methods of aquiring meats for my base and I have the crockpot recipes pretty much down pat.
I wouldn't recommend playing with RoG on (even with the difficult bits toned down in the options) until you've at least survived your first winter on vanilla Don't Starve. If you're up for a real challenge, go for it, or even try and take on adventure mode, but don't go in expecting the game to hold your hand because there's no convenient difficulty curve here.
