Any ideas?
Though to be honest... he brings in anyone who he thinks can free him from the chair, or just kill him. Because it is permadeath, you have to think that no one can remember what happened to them before.
Sorry, but there is distinct evidence that the characters do, or have known Maxwell prior to being pulled into this mess. Consider the quotes the characters use when referring to Maxwell-
Wilson - "I hate that guy."
Willow - "He is so condescending."
Wendy - "I feel a strange kinship with him."
Wolfgang - "A fancy suit is no match for my muscles."
Wickerbottom - "What a rude gentleman."
WX-78 - "HE IS UNKNOWN."
Wes - "..."
Maxwell - "Looking good!"
Woodie - "Why does he hate me?"
Wigfrid - "Arrg! Is that the antagönist tö my saga?"
Webber - "That jerk tricked us."
This, as well as various of quotes referring to Maxwell show that they knew Maxwell prior to being tricked into the world (specifically: Webber - "That jerk tricked us; Woodie - "Why does he hate me?"; Wendy - "I feel a strange kinship with him."). I have yet to see evidence of a quote that suggests lack or manipulation of memory (unless you include Wilsons access to forbidden knowledge. This can be further expanded upon by the fact that Wilsons blood was necessary to create the machine- I believe it has something to being in the same blood as Maxwell. Because of this, I assume that prior to being tricked- all of the characters were related by blood.
I doubt this as well as there are people that don't really know him as well, perhaps he was just finding suckers who would listen, like the devil and his contracts. They always backfire and lead you to damnation, not that I'm saying thats what happened but still.
