Don't Starve

best way to deal with wolves?
I was in the middle of getting suplies when I heard the cries of a wolf pack of 4, they were going to arrive at night fall. I had three chioces:

A) Run to the heavily populated pig village with my lighter equiped. Try to stay ahead of them until day break. Then watch the pigs beat them up.

B) Run back to my camp. The camp has a tent, bee mine, and some pig houses.

C) Stay where you are, build a campfire, and use your spear to fight them off

If you have armor, C isn't a bad idea, just time your attacks to take the least amount of damage possible.

A is also not a bad option, as you likely won't take much damage from doing so. Be careful if the pigs consume the monster meat though.

The only reason I don't recommend option B is due to fire hounds/red hounds, which could burn your base structures upon death if you're playing with Reign of Giants in Summer/Autumn.

I make a second camp with traps near my base (but not too close)
with multiples firepit and some armor/spears on the ground so even
if I have any/they broken it, I can still fight.

The best option is still the beefalo.
All you need is to make the hounds attack them and the beefalo will
do all the job. All you need to do is to dodge a hound attack and he will
bark... when they do that, there is a possibility to switch target (the beefalo hopefully).
That work if you dodge or if you are hit.

When the beefalo are in heat, this is even more easy
but more dangerous.

They don't eat the meat and if one die, you get free beefalo drop so that's not bad.

Early game, you can take them on face-to-face just make sure you're wearing a Log Suit and/or a Football Helmet ( + of course, a Spear ). Later in the game, you'll most likely want to get some traps ( a "panic room" per se is not a must but it can help... it's up to your play style ). If the hounds come during the day, then it's worth considering taking them near a Beefalo herd or Tentacles or Pigs ( they can usually deal with the hounds easily and you won't waste durability on your traps ). One of the reasons I like playing as Wickerbottom is because she can summon quite a few tentacles... once you have a decent amount in a group, all you need to do is run around them with hounds and they'll do the rest ( of course, they're hostile towards you as well, so just make sure you don't slowly wonder into them by accident and get slaughtered ).

Usually I'll try to lead them near some creatures that'll fight them. Pigs, Merms, Tentacles, Tallbirds, Mactusk... There's usually an option in your friendly local biome.

1. Always use armor.
2. If possible use neutral/or hostile crestures. Even beehives/spider nests are usefull bcoz of 'bite everything after bark' behavior.
3. If not possible kite and use other methods, traps or even 'burning areas' are usefull.
