You have to delete the cloud saves. That takes some steps. http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2470784
This guide should walk you through it.

You can try turning off steam cloud for Don't Starve.

Go to Don't Starve in your library.
EDIT: I'll have to double check these steps once I get home but I believe they are correct.

Don't Starve>Right Click>Properties>Updates>disable Steam Cloud sync. Then completely uninstall and reinstall Don't Starve. With Steam Cloud off it probably will not try to pull your old saves from the cloud and you should just have your new (blank character slot) files.

but you probably won't be able to turn on Cloud Sync for Don't Starve again without risking it pulling your old saves.

/Program Files(x86)/Steam/userdata/(Numbers)/(Numbers)/remote

For my numbers folder they're 41399162/219740
They could be random or may different compare to your directory.

If you see these files were found in folder "remote" delete ALL FILES in this folder and just start you game.

"morgue" & "survival_screecher" these 2 files are Don't Starve elements, you can ensure to do delete when you see them appear here.

boot_modindex
modindex
morgue
motd
profile
saveindex
survival_screecher

Is there no simpler way to do this?

There is indeed an easier way. For the morgue:

Open the in-game console (usually ~), type
ErasePersistentString("morgue")
press enter and then CTRL+L to remove the log overlay.

As for resetting unlocked characters (and unlocked worldgen components, and... your volume settings too? Really?) the console command you want is either
GetPlayer().profile:Reset()
or
GetPlayer().profile:SoftReset()
Unfortunately I'm not too familiar with the difference between them. SoftReset() might preserve your umlauts, volume and custom keyboard bindings? I'd have to read the code more carefully, and I'm not about to do that at midnight.

So I looked it up on reddit and saw a suggestion to try
ErasePersistentString("profile")
So that's another option.

Thank you. I have rather slow internet and wanted to avoid reinstalling the game. Well, it's time to get Maxwell...
