I just got the game about 10 minutes ago and I found beefalo and a lot of other good stuff.... as dusk came around on the first day I started chopping down trees, but on the trees suddenly turned purple and grew an eye.... it proceeded to kill me.... what just happened?

If u cut tress at dusk..it appears..its like a tree guardian...cut trees during day time :d

Also you can just kill it by setting it on fire with a torch

That isn't a tree guardian. Birchnut trees can become angered if you chop them and have a 50% of spawning an Angered Birchnut tree. Which is purple and has a single eye at top. Here is the Don’t Starve wiki page on that.

i am pretty sure they spawn only when birch is cut during dawn.

I cut down a dozen or so Birchnuts and never had one of these spawn. =/

The game plays a special score while chopping them though.
