Sometimes it's worth just restarting, but you really only need enough beefalo nearby to collect manure for farming. Don't kill more than you need to for making winter clothing, and just let the herd produce manure.
Koalafant hunting is a far better way to get food. I seem to always find them while I am out collecting other necessary materials or exploring, so I keep a boomerang ready all the time. It has worked for me over several different games for hundreds of days so far, even in winter.
And 20 days later I made from them ~60 steaks (thx to fire giant).
