Spring and Rain (spoilers inside)
Hey all!

With the new DLC came new seasons. Atm I'm struggling to manage Spring. Rain causes a new 'soak' meter to fill up. There are 3 noticeable things that happen as the soak meter begins to fill:

1. You begin to freeze.
2. Your items in your inventory become wet.
3. The more items you have on you that are wet will have a bigger impact on lowering sanity.

Now what I would like to know is how you guys have managed to cope during Spring. More specifically Spring on day 1. So far I have started 4 new worlds (everything set to default) I got spring 3 times. On all 3 occasions it rained on day 1 causing my soak meter to fill around the 50 mark. By day 2 with more rain I froze. I managed to make a Pretty Parasol but honestly it's effect at reducing the negative effects of rain were negligible. It's obvious the Pretty Parasol is to be used in summer to reduce the effects of the heat.

Note: this is all still early phase beta. So please share as much as you can to help Klei make any changes they deem necessary. Please don't say negative things (although constructive criticism is fine) as my intention here is to get as much positives out of this as possible.

Thanks.

Thanks for the input mate.

However would you care to share how you would craft one on day 1? Unless super lucky I find this option not so reliable.

Could there be any mechanics added to help with rain, such as standing under a tree or something like that?

Well atm the only way that I can find early on is using the Straw Hat and Pretty Parasol, so day 1 I gather the required resources for those. It's good enough until you can make an Umbrella. As far as I can tell Umbrella and Straw Hat will give you 100% protection from rain. Pretty Parasol is best used for Summer and heat waves.

According to the wiki, standing near a fire can help reduce Wetness, although I'm not sure if that would help while raining. Putting items in a Chest, even if raining, also seems to prevent them from becoming wet and allows them to dry out. It looks like a Straw Hat provides some small rain protection, so perhaps combining that with your Pretty Parasol may help; at the very least it might slow the time it takes to freeze and allow you to gather more resources, or outlast the rain.

I don't have the DLC, but it seems like the fastest thing you could do is make a Straw Hat, and perhaps rush a base. Even if it wasn't in the best location, at least until the rain stops, it looks like having Chests and a Fire(Even if it doesn't dry you out while it rains, you'll need it to prevent freezing) will be mandatory based on what you say.

Standing near a fire with no protection during rain will stop freezing but it wont stop the 'soak' meter filling.

Putting items in a chest will dry them out in a matter of seconds.

Freezing is based on how full the soak meter is, so wearing protection will slow down the rate at which the meter fills but it won't prevent freezing. Also carrying or eating ice (too much at one time) will cause freezing so beware.

Rushing a base would be viable. However during Spring it literally buckets down everyday or every other day.

If you stand with some protection near fire would that make the meter drop? I mean, other than that the best thing I can think of would be trying to find Caves and just dropping in; assuming it doesn't rain inside it'd be better than freezing to death if it dries you out a little, although valuable time is lost.

It looks like it might be important to carry supplies for a fire in more abundant qualities now, and set up Campfires where work needs to be done during the Spring. It really seems like this prevents players from rapidly expanding and figuring out the map if you're not prepared, so based on what you're saying it seems like either multiple permanent camp locations or having supplies for a Campfire, along with a Straw Hat seems like the best bet.

It certainly sounds challenging and tosses some wrenches into the usual "find perfect base location" tactic some people probably use. Looks like you'll need to set up a base when you can and making due with what's around, or Campfire hopping to find your desired location in order to prevent freezing.

I'll test it out again tomorrow. I can't remember. All I do know is that the wet meter carried on increasing while I stood next to a fire with straw hat and Pretty Parasol as it rained. But very slowly. The only time the soak meter decreases is when you have 100% protection or after the rain has stopped.

I managed to survive the whole of spring using Willow and randomly setting a grass, tree or twig on fire to keep warm. All while gathering as much food and setting as many traps down over rabbit holes. Acorns cooked over a fire heal you way too much so that helped as well. I had over 50 acorns from chopping down certain acorn producing trees. However Klei will nerf their stat boosting effects. Regardless it was tough and Summer got the best of me with the heat wave.

Edit: I could have prepared better for summer. However because it was my first time playing through Spring I spent most of the time exploring and looking at the changes. Definitely the DLC adds that extra level of challenge all us 'experienced' players have been drooling for. It's both exciting and challenging, with so much attention to detail, the soundtrack......left me mind blown.

I would say this would be the best way to survive Spring from day 1.

1. MAX stack twigs, grass, logs and petals.
2. Make a Straw Hat and Pretty Parasol ASAP. 70% wet resistant.
3. Search for Spider Dens destroy for silk.
4. With the DLC you'll encounter quite a few Merm vs Pigmen battles. If you're lucky you'll find Pig Skin randomly on the ground, or just help the Merms and kill some of the pigs while they aggro the Merms.
5. Get enough pig skin to make an Umbrella.

You're 100% protected from rain and the soak meter won't fill any more. It literally rains every day so keeping stock of all necessary items to craft more Umbrellas and Straw Hats is important. As soon as you get a hammer find those pig head poles and destroy them for more pig skin.

Perfect J20, came here to say this. I also made the mistake of starting in spring, and that's exactly how I handled it. I got lucky and found the new set piece with the single merm house surrounded by a couple free pigs, so right off the bat I had pig skin, and of course, spider dens were still Tier 1 and easy to destroy for silk. Dropped a science machine the moment I could, didn't matter the location.

Had a horrific time getting tentacle spots so I could craft the rain gear... once you can make the rain coat though, that's 100% rain protection. You can't wear a backpack of course, but neither you or your inventory items will get wet anymore. Using any other rain-protection items (hat, umbrella, parasol, etc) requires doubling-up to get full protection.

PS - watch out for the frogs. Theeeyyyyy're baaaaaaaack!
