Don't Starve

Don't Starve

Does the ALT+F4 savescumming trick still work?
Hi!

Just before you're about to die, you can press ALT+F4, and go back back to a previous safe place.

I know you could just say "Just don't do it?", but my OCD doesn't agree. :(

It still works assuming you have at least one revive and don't do it when it says Saving.

You could always... just, not do it, you know.

* C:
* Program Files
* Userdata
* (Numbered Folder)
* Copy folder '219740' onto your desktop or wherever. This is your 'backup'.
* Start up Don't Starve.
* Die violently.
* Quit Don't Starve.
* Delete '219740' folder that's sitting in the Userdata directory.
* Copy-paste '219740' that was sitting on your desktop (the backup).
* Start up game.

The issue;
When you die, the game MUST reroll the world. Once it's been rerolled once though, you can go back to it. So let's imagine this;

You have your backup folder already ('219740') and you died to bunnymen in the caves. First thing you'll do it quit out to the main menu of Don't Starve and start a new world in your previous saves place. (Forcing a reroll of the world). Quit Don't Starve and replace the save folder with the backup and start it again. Since you were in the caves, you'll need to reroll the caves aswell. Quit Don't Starve and replace the save folder with your backup.

Now that you've rerolled both the main world and the caves, your save is back to whenever you backed up the folder. This can be used to your advantage to 'regenerate' caves/ruins/overworld individually.

That said, i'm sure it differs from person to person but worlds where i've died and reverted to a back up I find.. kinda hard to play. Atleast not like I would have prior to dying. It effectively removes the 'lose' condition for the game and a game without a win/lose condition is pointless and boring, I guess. It is helpful though. I have a 'main' world which I use as a test world of sorts where I can try things I normally otherwise wouldn't because of the danger factor. Stuff like fighting the guardian without explosives, that sort of thing.

So take it as you will. A double edged sword that can definitely kill the enjoyment in the game (and especially the affected playthroughs.)
