Hound Mound Farming
I love the desert biome and all of it's hound mounds. However, there has to be a good way to farm them for hound's teeth! I've tried setting up spider dens varying distances away but the hounds always destroy them. Same thing happens with lureplants and their eyeplants. I've had an idea to box in the lureplant in stone walls because the eyeplants will spread beyond the walls but I haven't found one in my current game yet.

What have you guys found?

tooth traps. set tons of them somewhere a little bit away, then lure as many hounds as you can there

I tried farming a Hound Mound once too. I find it isn't very helpful. You gain at least one Tooth from an Ice or Fire Hound every time so I just let time run it's course and send Hounds.

I find it's not really worth it, the hounds that come every few days is enough. Maybe if you need monster meat but spiders will still be a better choice.

Tooth drop rates from hound mounds seem very low, I camped them for a day and wound up with 30 monster meat and only 2 hound's teeth. I'd say its just plain not worth the effort.

A method that I've used is building about 2 pig houses near each hound mound. The pigs handily dispatch the hounds. However this strategy is not without drawbakcs. First of all it's quite time consuming to build all those pig houses and it requires a lot of resources. Second, the pigs only attack during the day and only when the player is in the vicinity so don't expect to see loot on the ground every time you check. And thirdly, the hound tooth yield is disappointingly small. One of the benefits though is complete safety during the day to mine all those boulders and gold veins.

that's not true. i usually make a temporary camp with the most important things in the desert(firepit, icebox, alcamy engine, crockpot, birdcage) and hang around there during summer season, even without a flingo, because those few structures are easily replaceable, which makes it still more efficient to replace than refueling the flingo every day. it's the easiest methode to survive in summer, because vultures are a very good meat resource combined with monstermeat from either a den in a safe position or hounds. picking cactus is overpowered as heck during summer, even without wearing armor, because the flowers always heal more than what damage you've received from picking the cactus and the flower salat heals you for 40 hp and only requires you to pick 2 cacti and throw the flesh and flowers into the pot. tumbleweeds supply you easily with new twigs and gras etc.
i've noticed that during summer you'll see way more firehounds spawning from the mounds than usual and fire hounds have a 100% drop chance for teeths. during that summer season i also easily farmed about 10 red gems there. i didn't even need anything else but my trusty darksword to kill them(i'm playing as wes btw) . just make sure that you're not getting swarmed and always take them on 1 by 1.

that's ofcourse only the case during summer. during other seasons a varg farm might yield more teeths and gems, because he'll also spawn special hounds every now and then. during winter i suggest that you'll visit mc tusk as often as possible, his 2 hounds always drop 2 teeth each. gems are possible to acquire too and the mc tusk drops ofcourse, but they're not that important anymore, once you got his loot before.
