You will also have longer walk becouse of distance between those important places. If you are new I suggest you leave everything at default.
As for finding swamps / reeds.... take every wormhole you find, and just keep walkin'. There's not much you can do that will make it easier to find swamps.
Default size in ds is medium (i think they recently changed it to default = large in dst, which is interesting but not applicable here) I believe , and yes, it will be a little easier that way. However there are benefits to large too.
