Don't Starve

Shipwrecked is HARD :(
As a super seasoned and pro Don't Starve player I am totally getting my a** handed to me in SW. Even with some mods, reading the guides you awesome folks made and even the wikia, I'm still dying over and over again. Just tell me I'm not the only one!

Hurricane winds destroy pig huts and bee hives and spiders (if they are close by) you can build them further away and only go to them when the danger has passed, the giants destroyed even more (their purpose in the game is to destroy your base and food sources.

storm does NOT destroy beehives, spider dens or primeape huts. i'm not sure where this hoax arrised from because i've heard this nonsense somewhere else before.

the last time i checked it myself it only wrecked all walls, trees, wild bore houses and it blows the collectable off of grass, twigs, vines and bamboo bushes, thats it. the wind doesn't even touch snake dens which are a vine bush version with snakes living in.

yes spider dens maybe got wrecked in hurricane season but not due to the storm but because of the broken hail mechanic which did rapidly 1 hp damage over and over again and that could indeed kill a spidernest, lureplant or beehives.

this got fixed in the latest update so pls dont spread false informations.

Also, what character are you guys having the most success with? I've always used Wigfrid a lot because she kicks all the monster butts, but feeding her only meat based recipes is proving difficult in SW. Wilson is always a good all around, but early on he gets killed a lot because finding ingredients to craft a football helmet is challenging. What is working for you guys the best?

I love playing as Maxwell or Wickerbottom. Maxwell is fantastic as his sanity doesn't ever change (but if you aren't a good fighter, his low hp will be too problematic). In SW, wickerbottom is an extremely easy character to play. you start off the with knowledge to make many nautical items, and a backpack, giving you a huge advantage.

Also, there is definitely no shortage of meat in SW. Make mussel sticks and plant them everywhere. After a few days you have between 3-6 mussels with each stick. Chop jungle trees and get eggs or bananas, or use limpets/monster meat and coconuts to make meatballs. Crabs should be everywhere as well. If you're in dire straits, carry around a trap, run up to crabs, and when they dig into the sand just drop the trap on top of them. instant dinner. Living near a snake bush is easy food as well, once you figure out how to fight them. Around monkeys? Take your banannas to the jungle, feed a few, then attack another one. Watch the monkey war, Pick up all the banannas and morsels and call it a day! Also, seaweed is everywhere. a limpet/monster meat/mussel and some seaweed for meatballs.

Yessss, me too. I think my biggest complaint is lack of readily available materials. Like rocks/gold for example, those are pretty basic and important and I'm constantly running out of flint and there's just not enough, or it's so spread out that I'll never find it in time.

I try to roam and scavenge until i find gold to set up a decent base. Its not on the starting island, you Have to make a boat and go look for it. But usually by the time you find enough, you know which islands are where, and find a great place to set up. Have to be willing to travel.

I've never played much as Wickerbottom, I'll give that a shot, thanks! And bc the monkeys are so crazy I've been avoiding them mostly, and I totally forgot about mussel sticks, thank you! so much!

NP! I mean. Wickerbottoms only real catch is that she cant sleep, so you have to keep an eye on her sanity. I tend to camp out on the edge of a jungle and the beach, easier access to crabs and the mushrooms/flowers in the jungle. Also, a bananna, hail and two sticks makes bananna pops, which are great for sanity. Surf and Turf is great for health and sanity also, A monster meat and 3 mussels/limpets i believe? Another thing i do is make a TON of drying racks. Like... 20 or so. Turn all my crabs into jerky. Not only is jerky great for sanity and health, but it lasts quite awhile, and in the beginning, gears are pretty annoying to find. So long as you travel a bit by boat, the floaty knights start spawning in the water near your camp after a bit, so eventually you'll have more gears than you know what to do with. Hint on that as well, the knights only seem to do range fighting. Don your life jacket (better safe than sorry), hop in your armored boat, speed on over to them and whack em in the face with a spear a few times.

Besides monkey wars, i hammer all the huts except one or two (i try to keep the ones furthest from my base). Poop isn't easy to come by, so i try to stock up on green mushrooms, then attack some monkeys. Collect poop, make farms :D And if you manage to kill them, the loot is fantastic.

Random tips, if you play as wickerbottom, plant a lure plant (wait for eyes to spawn), then read the birds book. Kill the bulb and gather a ton of morsels and feathers. To make life easier you can plant some turf to have a safe pathway to the bulb.

And if you're brave enough to live near a swamp (keep the timing on the poison pits and you can avoid the gas clouds pretty well, or wear a gas mask), the fishermerms (passive mobs) do all the fishing for you. I run over a few times a day, gather my 15 fish and run away :P

Actually, I kind of find Shipwrecked easier than the base game. Food is easier to find since jungle trees can drop eggs and bananas, palm trees will always drop coconuts if they're fully matured, seaweed is easy to find when sailing, and crabs are plentiful. Not to mention no deerclops popping up at the end of Winter to smash your base.

We are still in early access. Things may change.

I got eaten by a giant shark.

I've played as webber, but his ability to make silk and eat monster meat raw makes him too OP.

I've started playing as warly and would highly recommend him. His portable crockpot and cool pack means you can travel as much as the weather permits. I made a starter base to prototype all the recipes, and then just sail around exploring until something kills me.

It's certainly not going to change to get harder. Every other thread is talking about how unplayable and hard the game is. There are enough people complaining about how overpowered hail/poison/rain/wind/eruptions are, that i wont be surprized if it all gets completely nerfed. I loved the first release of SW, and now, hail/rain/eruptions have already been nerfed. Really disappointing.

My continual suggestion to anyone struggling with SW is to read the wiki, or avoid things until you're sure you understand the mechanic, or just to avoid trouble. If i see a stinkray shadow underwater, i back up a bit and go around. I put on seashell armor to chop jungle trees/ fight spiders/ hang out near puddles in monsoon season.

U R not!! I got everzthing right and still was killed by bunch of stupid red sharks because they rekt my poor cargo ship..

Little bit of help on the water hounds.
-Keep a life jacket in your backpack or something. If you fight in a boat, try and only fight in the armored boat, and put the life jacket on first.
-When you hear your character give the line to warn you about a hound attack while in a boat (is it the same for all the characters? "I'm going to need a bigger boat") head for the nearest island. I stay in the boat right next to land, then as soon as they get close, jump to the island. if you time it right, they'll come right up to the shoreline to try and attack you. you can just fight from land with no fear of drowning or ruining your boat.
-If you aren't trying to get a fin to make the hat, and it's easier for you to fight regular hounds, just jump onto an island and run around, as soon as you hear the warning. Then it will spawn regular hounds instead of sea hounds.

Thanks for helping! I just have some more questions:
When I hear the warning for reguklar hounds I jumpped onto the boat and sail to a barren island. After the hounds appeared I returned to my home but on the way back the sea hounds came. Why did they both come?
And how can I fight both hounds easily since tooth trap is so hard to make? What do you use the fin hat for?

THX :)

Fin hat is just like the walking cane in regular. Just makes you faster. Only difference is that the fin hat has durability, which kinda sucks... but fins are pretty available. Eventually, hounds spawn more frequently, so youll have an endless supply of teeth. Much easier to make them then, and it'll end up being necessary as the longer your save, the more frequent and in larger numbers, they spawn. And rows of teeth traps make them really easy to deal with. You just run along the road and they die behind you XD Also, I haven't see both spawn at once, maybe it's because you didn't kill the first and just tried to run?

If you have trouble with regular hounds, I'd suggest trying to cut down coconut trees (keep the coconuts) until you get the tree giant. Then plant the coconuts near him to pacify him. If you do that near your base, anytime there are hounds just run around him until the hounds start attacking the tree giant. He takes them out Really fast.

So. Next time, try killing them all after the spawn, or finding a mob that can take care of them for you. Spiders/ tree giants/ monkeys/ snakes. I feel like the sea hounds are pretty easy to kill. If you wait near shore, then as they spawn, sail to the shore. As soon as they're right next to you, jump onto the shore. They should be Right next to the shoreline. Sometimes they aren't close enough to hit, so i drop some meat by the water and they come over. But usually you can hit one, run further onto land, then come back and hit a few more times. By dodging further back onto the shore, they cant hurt you. good luck!
What is killing me is the rainy season: mosquito poison, sanity loss from being water logged.

Has anyone ever been wet? It's not that bad. Nothing compared to generic isolation which should be a base sanity loss for the single player game.

Having only one path to poison cure is very frustrating considering the mosquitoes are fast and basically pop out of nowhere in the rainy season.

Again, ask your self would you rather be too wet, too hungry, too cold or too hot? Obviously we would rather be wet than the other three, and yet water drains your sanity like nothing else in the game. Tone down the drain, or at least let me reverse the damage by drying off.
My record in 21 days in. Considering my standard in the Vanilla is 200ish days, I'm feeling a little out of my depth.

I totally agree. My main issue has been sanity constantly draining all the time, for seemingly NO REASON. If it is going to constantly rain then maybe wetness needs to be less damaging, because it's nearly impossible to avoid.
Rain is easy to deal with, a palm leaf hut at your camp will keep you completely dry when you stand under it, snakeskin jackets and hats will keep you dry when you're on the move.
Rain is very easy, flooding is a whole new matter of disaster tho.
Tip when your base is completely flooded: make a hat and an umbrella and go into the sea until the base dry up
I recently did two shipwrecked playthroughs and I couldn't find water beefalo. The mangrove swamps were empty and there wasn't even any monkeys. I need poop but I just keep wandering around making zero progress.

You can give pigs something to eat except monster meat and they will make it to poop sometimes. And there seem to be many pigs in shipwrecked.

sw seems to be harder but it actually isn't. your biggest enemy in sw is impatience, for me atleast. i want to have almost everything at the end of the first season (gras/twigs farm, alcamy, shadow manipulator, a replanted spider den nearby, bird cage, ice makers, beeboxes etc).

Yep, you really can survive in this game minimalistically. All you need is an island with seaweed and a source of monster meat or jerky makings for the crockpot (meatballs rock). Other items are the chiminea, the palm leaf hut, lightning rod, maybe one stack of sandbags and as many chests as you need, that will set your base up for 3/4 of the year. Using wigfrid or wx just makes it harder, but it's a good way to challenge yourself when you get the hang of it.

Basic equipment for other things are spears and shell armor, umbrellas are nice but don't kill yourself looking for silk and pigskin.
