The Tree Cycle

The 4-stage life cycle of a tree after growing from a sapling is small, medium, large and aged. When the Tree becomes "Aged" it loses all of it's leaves and they stop dropping logs when cut down.

Does this mean that there is a countdown for all the trees in the world eventually turning into "Aged Trees"? Or is there a system in place where saplings spawn randomly, or "Aged Trees" are automatically felled and saplings take their place.

It's actually a looping cycle, the aged trees will eventually shrink back down to their small state and begin the cycle again.
