Placing sandbags in your base doesn't actually help during spring flood season. The way you do it is keep the sandbags in your inventory at around day 44-46, when the first major spring shower hits. As soon as it starts raining, you will see square puddles form around your island. Place one sandbag in the middle of each puddle, and it will NOT spread anymore. Be on the lookout for rectagular puddles cause there might be two puddles overlapping. Here is a screenshot on how to do it. http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=579966169

ohh hmmm. Usually when I get hit by lightning it doesn't do much damage. I noticed when playing as wigfrid I seem to get struck by lightning more when I wear my helmet. But other than that, I usually don't mind getting hit by lightning. Once you start establishing your base, You can transplant the bamboo plants with a shovel and fertilize them. Since your base should have a lightning rod, you can then keep harvesting the bamboo at your base in safety.

Once you start to memorize all the recipes for crafting, or at least have an idea of what to collect so later you can craft them, you will be able to craft enough so you get a lot of sanity from inventing new things. It just takes practice, and you get faster and faster. You can also make a tent or straw roll to sleep and regain sanity. Also, craft a Pirate Hat or Sandcastle. Keep an eye on when you get wet, and make sure you stand directly next to a fire to get dry again.

It's too late by that point. Some puddles can spawn right along the coast line so you have to look carefully at the squares of water that are not in line with the regular coast. If your island is already flooded, it may be too late to do anything about and you just have to wait it out or find dry ground.
I hope they resolve it so they would retain water as expected.
