Easiest and cheesiest ways to deal with Crocodogs are other threats you can use to kite crocodogs to them. The most effective things are lureplants. Just have a lureplant island or your home island with a bunch of lureplants. Run them around the eyeplants and they'll quickly get lost attacking plants instead of you. They don't burn like firehounds so this works in all seasons.
I also will spawn random blue whales around places I frequently travel. Blue whales even help each other in combat. If treeguards spawn, find a way to lose aggro and they're also a passive threat that crocodogs will attack after they're bored with you.
The classic way to deal with hounds and crocodogs however is to use tooth traps. Tooth traps are OP as heck and they're cheap. Just 1 tooth (you will have tons from hounds) 1 log and 1 rope will give you a tooth trap with 10 uses. Simply make a large patch of them, or a narrow stone/limestone wall that will ensure crocodogs will have to run over them to get at you as you run through.
Bush hat is also extremely OP if used correctly. be in hiding BEFORE the first crocodog spawns in and it wont aggro onto you, and instead pick the closest target to attack instead. Then you can just park near other mobs like a bunch of pigs or monkeys or spiders and wait for them to take the fight instead. Just make sure there's something for them to attack on screen, 'cuz if there's not they're scripted to just meander over to where you are and you'll just be trapped with a bunch of hungry crocodogs around until you make a break for it.
Let me know what the 'lureplant' is and if it's the eyeball or not.
They actually spawn less often after day 100 in the beta branch, and they also don't spawn immediately after you enter the world from the volcano or from a connected world.
The best ways to deal with them are, in my opinion:
1. Ballphins - you need at least several palaces, so they spawn consistently. Don't overdo, though: I had 9 palaces, and by year 3 there were 100+ ballphins. Yes, they can kill pretty much everything within seconds, including Sealnado and Tiger Shark, but man, those lags... I recommend that you build 6-8 palaces during the first mild season and then leave 3 and destroy the rest of them. (Early game)
2. Elephant cacti - bring 20-30 from the volcano and build a panic room. Very low maintenance, perfect for crocodogs and farming spiders. (Mid-late game)
3. Other methods include lureplants, pigs, dragoons, tallbirds or spiders. None of them are as good as the first 2, but you can make some cool stuff with dragoons.
4. Bonus - Watchtowers from Hamlet can be built in Shipwrecked using Brain of Thought, but this is a very late-game and very expensive tactic. I don't think you can afford it right now.
5. Finally, tooth traps. This one is redundant, because you need crocodog TEETH to make TOOTH traps. If you have this many teeth, you probably already know how to deal with crocodogs.
Day 100?? Ok let me clarify a bit...in the shipwreck dlc I have yet to make it past day 35 maybe? The emergence of the dam dogs is such a gamekiller for me compared to the other versions because...the first several days I can't just 'relax' and chill creating my domain, I need to scurry around oftentimes on a wooden raft trying to locate palaces...most the time I will find a lonely single palace by day 3 or so...I'm also keeping an eye out for pig houses.
Elephant cacti...what the hell is that? I've never even known about a 'volcano' in any of the dlc's, i'm obviously not playing correctly!
Lureplants, I've asked before, what are they and where do I find them? Are they the eyeball plants?
Tallbirds...I'm quite familiar with them but tbh, I've yet to even find one in shipwreck..
Let me sum up my frustration...it feels like all of these things are found with long-term searching but with these dogs...by the third time they have attacked me by day 40ish, they have amassed in such numbers that they overwhelm me because I've wasted so much time in the beginning searching for the freakin dalphins!!
It would be so much simpler if when I just check in the settings :NO CROCODOGS that when I play shipwreck, I can enjoy it which I would sooooo love to do, as again, it's one of my fave dlc's. (sigh) but I do appreciate the suggestions....I've just never seen any of them!!
1. Ballphin palaces are pretty common among coral reefs. Sometimes you can find clusters of 10-12, but usually 2-6. There are A LOT of them, believe me. You need to break 2 in order to build 1, they don't mind their homes being demolished, just like pigs in base game. The first couple waves of crocodogs are not even waves - just 2-3 puny lizards that can be stunlocked without any help - just avoid the first strike and counterattack until it's dead. By day 30 you should have your ballphin palaces.
2. Elephant cactus is a plant/mob that grows in the volcano. Volcano is a location that usually can be found in one of the corners of the map, but not always. It's on the egde, 100%. Replanting them can be tricky, but worth it. They have AOE damage, and can be made into an effective death trap for any small creatures.
In short, Volcano is a separate donut-shaped location with coffee, elephant cacti, dragoons, a lot of minerals and an altar that allows you to avoid eruptions during the dry season. I highly recommend setting a small base there and spending most of the dry season there. All you need is an endothermic firepit, crockpots, a fridge and preferably a birdcage to make the dry season an non-issue. By the way. crocodog attacks don't happen there, as well as monsoon floods.
3. Lureplants are bulbs that spawn randomly. They also spawn eyes around it, and those eyes attack anything that comes close, but die from one strike. if you get to the bulb and kill it, you can replant it somewhere else. The bulb itself creates a piece of meat as a lure every few days, and eyeplants don't grow on some turfs (magma, volcanic, ashen, wooden, cobblestones, snakeskin rug, etc), so you can just plant a bunch of them and collect the meat. Or you can plant them on fertile turfs and use as a trap. A pretty useful resource.
4. Forget about tallbirds, really.
I will try to make it to the edge next time to find the elusive volcano land, and a huge thank you because I also didn't realize I could smash the palaces to make new ones, and yes I've smashed pig houses before so I know the concept, just didn't apply it to the dalphins...I've also found a dragoon egg in the past but wasn't sure what to do with it so just carried it around i think...alright at least I have a plan now and i'll be going Off of the beta branch since they spawn so much sooner, it still causes angst haha.
Many many thanks to ALL :D
Well, the idea is to prepare for the next season during the current one.
Mild season - get waterproof clothes, chiminea and a lightning rod.
Hurricane season - repair your clothes, prepare you base for floods (sandbags, wooden turf), survive the first Sealnado attack.
Monsoon season - kill Tiger Shark, craft a Dumbrella, Ice Box, Endothermic Fire Pit, Thermal Stone, Find the voclano and the altar inside. Or make a small base on a separate island if you haven't found the volcano.
Dry season - keep yourself cool, appease the volcano or dodge during the eruptions.
This is my general strategy, I hope it helps:
Days 1-20: Bamboo raft - Find gold - Find a tar slick (FUEL) - Build basic structures (Alchemy Engine, Chiminea, Lightning Rod, a couple chests) - Build Armored Boat and Cloth Sail - Get some limestone - Build a tar extractor (FUEL) - Build Sea Yard (SHIP) - Make 5-6 Trawl Nets - Replant 20-30 Seaweed (FOOD) - Break and build 6-8 Ballphin Palaces on my base (DEFENSE) - Make Snakeskin Hat and Jacket (WETNESS) - Find a Swordfish spawn and make Cutlass Supreme - Replant some grass, twigs and bamboo.
Days 21-36: Replant a spider nest - Cover a 4x4 area with wooden turf - Surround it with sandbags - make a Sewing Kit.
Days 37-56 - Find and kill Tiger Shark (Cutlass Supreme will help a lot) - Craft a Dumbrella - Prefab and Ice Box and and Endothermic Firepit - Try to find the Volcano.
As you see, days 1-25 are the most intense and can make or break your playthrough.
you can keep one on you and play it when most dogs are on screen and then just kill them one after another.
i advise that you do this on land because on the boat you will get stunlocked to death too easily.
this strategy allows you to do more exploring in sw. just seek land when you hear the warning.
