DS vs DST for solo play?
I'm not clear on the overall difference between the two for people who are playing solo, and since getting into this game is something of a mental investment, so to speak, I want to be sure I fire up the version more suited to how I'm likely to be playing.

I'd give this a watch because it's a lot to explain in text

My personal preference is DS for solo but lots of people play DST solo as well, it's down to preference and both games have different content suited for themselves.

DS is balanced for solo. Enemy health size, for example. DST is balanced for a team (most likely for a team of 6). You can use mods to make solo better, but there are no guarantees that mods won't stop working after game, or that they will conflict with other mods.

In DS, there is Adventure mode. Not much of a story.

DS has Shipwrecked and Hamlet DLC. Different experience than base game/forest world. New items, new enemies, new mechanics and so on. DST had updates which added Shipwrecked inspired content, but it's not the same experience. There is a fan-made port called "Island Adventures". Shipwrecked with some balance changes and DST content. Not ideal, but it's the best option we have so far.
No Hamlet equivalent, sadly. I've heard from players (haven't played much) that Hamlet is closer to RPG. You can buy items, renovate building etc.

Characters in DST were reworked. They are (at least for me) much more fun to play as. DS haven't received similar updates.
Some characters didn't return to DST, while new characters were added.

DST received many content and QoL updates. Character reworks, as mentioned above. New bosses, new items, new NPC, new interface and more.

If you want to play Shipwrecked, then play DS or IA mod for DST. If you want to play Hamlet, then play DS. For base game content, try DST.

I play Ds and Dst, the diference is big tbh, for content I'd go to Ds, for big challenges I'd go for Dst and Im a challenge guy tbh

Hm, tough decision then. From what I'm seeing DS is probably the better choice, but only if I get the DLCs I don't yet have. Or at the least, Reign of Giants. Or might it be worthwhile to learn the systems without Reign and pick the DLC u plater when my cash is a bit better. (I already owned DS ages ago just never quite got around to playing)

every different DLC has different playstyle anyway. I know the base game pretty well, ROG feels like an expansion of that, but when it comes to shipwreck I am totally lost for instance. but there are also mods for free

- DST has much more content than DS + RoG

- DS + (RoG+Shipwrecked+Hamlet) has much more content than DST

- DST is balanced around multiplayer, thus much harder in solo (but doable still, plus you have mods to reduce boss health)

- DST always lags a bit, even in solo, you don't really mind when you play it a lot but it's jarring when you're used to DS's extremely responsive controls.

-DST reworked all the base characters, they tend to have more mechanics to them overall, some of them are bloated, some of them are much more interesting than their DS counterparts. Balance is different in both games as a result, and DST tends to be the more balanced game (WX-78 in DS is absolutely overpowered in ways no DST character is)

- DST has cosmetics, hundreds of skins for just about any character / item, and you get them as freebies while playing.

Both games are really good and have enough content to warrant being played in solo, but DS has always been the more enjoyable one for me, because while I love some of the DST updates, Shipwrecked DLC is in a league of fun of its own.

If DS solo had the updates DST brought for RoG, it'd be perfect. If DST had implemented shiprecked/hamlet, it'd be perfect. But for now, you kinda need to get both if you want to see all there is to see.

DST solo is for people who actually have time on their hands. The game is clearly balanced for Multiplayer, and a lot of the things you have to do to solo it requires time to get good enough, planning, etc.

That's why most people who solo DST also makes youtube video, its very time consuming.

I also prefer DS in general, more options, its more contained, I just WISH they update the UI to match DST because the old UI from DS is bad.
