King of Winter is in my opinion the hardest chapter to start on, but also potentially one of best to start on. Easy access to walrus camps for a tam o shanter and the walking cane, and once its cleared that chapter never comes around again.
Archipelago is a good starting chapter in terms of difficulty, with nothing major to pose a threat. Very easy to prototype items for later chapters, like a thermal stone for example.
King of Winter is hard when you start off with it, because you have to settle in and make an alchemy engine before you can start getting winter clothes to explore.
Plus you cannot carry around a backpack or logsuit unless you want to sacrifice your puffy vest for it.
Darkness is hard purely because of RNG. Minershats, Torches, Lighters, etc, still don't reveal what's completely around you. At literally any moment, you could run into Hound Mounds, Queen Gatherings, T2 spider dens, get ambushed by werepigs, get ambushed by a swathe of spiders, not to mention you have to sacrifice a slot that would usually be taken by a Football Helmet or Beefalo Hat when you want to fight, which, if you use the logsuit (Which is the logical course of action) Your armor is basically cut in half without a good helmet.
In All honesty KOW was pretty easy overall, the only problem i had was my low sanity... being chased by terrorbeaks in the middle of the night is soo annoying, but in Darkness its something you have to deal with quite often so I Guess Darkness might be tons harder even thou as you all said it IS the last one and you come prepared normally. My problem is that when it comes to figthing McTusk i have a horrible time, I need to come up with a strategy for him soon because getting that tam O Shanter is almost crucial to adventure mode
It depends on your character and RNG. Darkness can be tough, but any of the land bridges with a sanity based gate can be difficult when presented at a bad time. Also, if you get darkness with a ton of clockworks you’ll be killed no matter what due to not being able to place the things in. I only saw that once out of the few times I beat it while hunting Wes.
All the earlier levels allow you for some camping, resource gathering, and inventing, but darkness pretty much requires you just go before you run out of resources.
