Weapon - depends. High overall damage - Dark Sword and Cutlass Supreme. Highest damage during spring - Morning Star. Most efficient use during winter - Obsidian Spear.
Thulecite suit isn't the best for protection (90%), night armor and marble suit both have 95% but both don't have nearly as much durability and they both have drawbacks.
Thulecite suit - 90% damage reduction, 1800 durability and +3 sanity/min regen.
Night armor - 95% damage reduction, 750 durability and -9 sanity/min.
Marble suit - 95% damage reduction, 1050 durability and -30% movement speed.
About weapons:
Dark Sword - 68 damage, 100 uses and -25 sanity/min.
Cutlass Supreme - 68 damage (102 to Sealnado), 150 uses.
Morning Star - 43 damage to dry targets and 72 damage to wet targets, 6 minute durability. (My personal favorite weapon in the game)
Obsidian Spear - 51-102 damage (charges the more you hit things), overheats you normally, but keeps you warm enough in winter.
Call me old-fashioned, but there's almost nothing I like more than a Log Suit and a Tentacle Spike. I've tried the other items, but they're hard to obtain and don't last as long and they're expensive to replace. Sure, they're a lot cooler, but I've kicked plenty of butt with the former.
If you're hoping to take down giants, just lure them to a group of Tree Guards or a hoard of Hounds. I purposely chop down trees until I have at least 3-4 Tree Guards active at all times. They're super helpful buddies for fighting any bad guy. You can even awaken them in the Caves.
Just my two cents.
