Don't Starve

Don't Starve

Is it just me or does the game feel like a chore to play?
Maybe I'm just getting bored of the whole survival permadeath genre. I've put 10 hours into this game so far and I'm just not seeing the fun side of things. The combat is fustrating, harvesting is slow and everytime I die I feel like I've just wasted 2-3 hours having accomplished nothing besides gaining some foresight...

Apart from the art style, nothing sets it out from all the other survival games on Steam. Feel like I've wasted my money on this one and joined the hype train just to end up dissapointed.
I don't know, you guys tell me; am I doing something wrong because I'm not seeing the critically acclaimed game everyone is talking about here. :steambored:

This game is fun only when you've reached the stage of knowing what exactly you want to do next and how you are going to acheive it.

For example, the first few days would be to look for an ideal location(this comes with knowledge as to which area to set up your base for sustainable play. Also, in your mind you should already be thinking of which items to craft and that would direct you to getting the corresponding resources.

Therefore, this game isn't just about picking berries so you won't starve and killing monsters for the fun of it. The fun comes with "advancing" your game by building more items in your base to make living easier.

That being said, a lot of time has to be invested into reading up (wikia/forums) or watching youtube videos on guides/walkthrough/let's play. I personally have spent more time watching (20>hrs) than playing(10>hrs) so far. This is because how much fun you derive from the game almost comes entirely from yourself, your own goals/management.

So let me get this straight. The fun comes from advancing the game? If so, it must be such a monotonous and boring experience overall if that's where the excitment is at because the gameplay itself is nothing to write home about.

Pretty sure this game just isn't your cup of tea, just like me and League of Legends. Just refund or give to someone else that would enjoy it more I guess.

I can't do either now. Someone has yet to explain to me what makes this game so special besides it's art style because the gameplay is boring... I'm seeing overwhelmingly positively reviews on Steam, some of the highest so I don't get it.

Yea the fun comes from advancing and becoming stronger because you are able to craft more weapons and armor to take on bigger monsters on the combat side and on your base, you're able to build a more sophisticated base (for example a farming system of plants or animals, bird cage, tooth trap panic room etc). Not to also mention the caves and ruins are late gameplay exploration where the rare resources are to craft powerful and rare items.

This game is not high-key stimulating/exciting as FPS or turned based strategy games or combat-emphasized RPG games. So this game I would say is not for people who do not find fun in exploration/crafting and advancing on your own.

I played Terraria and at least that has a somewhat decent combat system. The combat system in don't starve is fustrating. Its clearly not a problem with the genre but the game itself.

Do you even know steam refund policy and 2 hours limit?

You know what's more frustrating and wayste of time? Dying in adventure mode. It's pure evil middle finger for all who is not a pro/nerd at this game. Chaotic unbalanced level designs, ultra hard and the worst of all there is no save points when you beat chapters! I waysted 7h to get to chapter 3 to die to the stupid thing. All that effort and time got waysted and in return I got nothing, except anger and dissapointment.

Yeah, the death in Adventure Mode is pretty brutal, no redemption, no Rollback, just go restart everything xD. I already got Maxell though, and if you want to get him without the uneccessary stress, you could just unlock him via console commands.

It does get a bit boring, once getting past ady 200 like me, inwhere you have basically nothing to do. I've built everything, slayed everything, killed all the rog bosses, etc.

So, I just...keep going for some reason

Not to mention by the time my money did get refunded, the sales would have ended...

I find Don't Starve to be tremendous fun. Easily one of the best games I've ever bought and certainly one of the best values for the money I've spent.

The early days are ones where you are dying and cursing and wishing you hadn't made some mistakes or gotten taken by surprise. You vow to never make those mistakes again (and then you do it anyway sometimes). You learn and get better. You unlock new characters and figure out which ones you like and which you don't. You set goals for future games like surviving to 100 days or moving through five worlds or beating Adventure Mode for the first time (that one is really tough but rewarding).

I adore the fact that the game is uncompromising, forces you to plan, and punishes you for panicking. I actually pay my daughter to play this game because of those skills being developed.

People are different and there is no harm or shame in this game not being your cup of tea. But it has a huge, enthusiastic fan base and is very highly rated. It would be a bit silly to pretend that the game design is flawed rather than it simply being a mismatch to your tastes.

Let's see. You have 3000+ hours and you have to PAY your daughter to play the game. That tells me what I need to know about you as a person.

You haven't explained how this game is anything but a monotenous grind, neither have others They have just stated "progression=fun" but that's just brought down by the fact that there's perma death making any accomplishments you've made during those 2-3 hours or more redundent. The game at various point forces you to grind endlessly just to maintain your character being alive, that coupled with the poorly designed combat and the perma death makes it a hassle to play every damn time. I can't see how this game got more than 90% review score, the world must be going mad.

I can explain some ways its a grind where it doesn't need to be.

Adventure mode doesn't need to start all over from the start just because you died. It could start you right back with the current world with a new world generation.

Theres more characters than save slots and its needless grind, that to activate Adventure mode you have to explore all over the survival map first on EVERY character to find the max gate to use it with them. When, when entering adventure mode it could have a character select screen.

Many Foods could do a better HP heal than 3. BTW the maxed robot has 400 hp.

Spike traps shouldn't need resetting after every time or shouldn't do such junk damage.

Hounds waves late game are completely unreasonable and entirely unfun.

Not being able to destroy tallbird nests so they stop spawning and continue to block paths or areas.

The worst thing in the entire game, the constant maintaining of spider nests. All we would need is a craft recipie to create an always tier 1 spider nest structure and this stupid pointless constant grind would be a thing of the past.

Summer Fire. It litterly adds no enjoyment to the game. Its just there to make you remake your entire base from scratch if you didn't grind a billion ice during winter and spring.

Fire hounds. Because you wanted everything you own burned down right?

Instant on touch base destruction bosses like bearager.

A Cold Reception as the first adventure level when playing as the robot. You might as well just auto kill yourself.

Ashes blowing away.

How rapidly armor chests and armor helms break from only a few hits

Backpacks able to catch on fire

The many bosses who knock your weapon out of your hand. You know the thing thats used to idk fight??????

The huge number of melee hits a tier 3 spider nest takes to destroy is long enough my character says the attack phrase twice.

In SW

Snakes, need I say more? The spawn rates of these is anything but fun. And they drop even worse than spiders.

Poison spiders and poison snakes. Weren't spider warriors annoying enough?

Waves. Dodging these gets so old, so very, very, very fast.

Since you clearly can't rely on a 90%+ score to be a good indicator of a game you'll like, I'd recommend watching some Let's Play videos so you can be sure a game has the sort of style and content that you'll enjoy.
