Overheating at Evening/Night?
So I made it to day 61, the furthest I've made it. I was completely unprepared for summer and was overheating. I thought overheating went away at evening and night, but I guess I was wrong, and died. Is that the case, or is my game bugged?

That's the case, just like freezing happens during day time.

I was overheating at day and evening, not at night.

no, the overheating is so stupid that even without external heat sources (like standing next to a fire, etc), you can still overheat during evening and night. Bc overheating is idiotically implemented.

I see a fair amount of people with this mindset. Makes me kinda sad. I like the way our enviromental hazards work out. The seasons and temperature are done in both a realistic and functioning manner.

ROG is certainly harder than the vanilla counterpart. And that is appealing for me. I've read plenty of complaints about overheating, but I've also seen people complain that things get too easy, or that there isn't enough added to the game that should be.

Temperature is one of those things that, in terms of actual survival, is a huge factor in your day to day activities. Rain, intense heat, freezing cold. They offer a lovely challenge that keeps the pace of the game fresh.

Because now, even after you've gotten yourself a super camp, there is still a constant, pressing need to prepare for what will be thrown at you. Something that aims to get in your way, no matter how safe you may feel turtled around your base.

For me, after ROG, I had a purpose again. In vanilla I hit day 100, had three different bases but never had to leave for a single thing. Once you get set up enough, just survivng isn't really entertaining. Being handed bosses to fight, and seasonal challenges to conquer, gives you a constant purpose...even after the depths of the ruins have become your playground.

Anyway, sorry for the long rant. I've been struggling with my own frustrations and feelings on ROG and just recently came to peace with it all and hit my stride :)

During the seasons of extreme temperatures (Winter and Summer), the effects translate throughout the day similarly to how the would in the real world. So for Summer:

It's the most hot during the day because the sun is out and heating up your environment.
It cools down slightly during the dusk since the sun went down, but all that heat baking into the world for so many hours still exists. It needs time to release.
It cools down even more in nighttime, but heat still exists because it's crazy hot Summer. It doesn't go away, just minimizes.

At night, I'm usually fine just doing stuff around my base, and running back to my endothermic fire pit every now and again. It only takes the one thing to cool me off. During the day, it takes 2 things (clothing/stone/etc) plus an endothermic fire here and there (assuming I don't have other types of coolers).

I live in the desert and it can stay at in the 90s at night.

Simple Summer

If you're not in combat, put on a straw hat. Summer clothes aren't as easy to get as winter ones in my opinion, but there's no excuse not to have a straw hat ready. Straw hats not only keep you cool in summer, but they also reduce wetness during rains.

Never ever drop or leave pine cones on the ground. You will need these for summer farming (and pacifying treeguards). Plant pine cones every so often on your regular routes to places like the swamp or boulders. Also keep a couple trees on the perimeter of your base. When you start to overheat, stand on a tree. Your character will make a remark about the tree's protection. You won't cool off like the nitre based fire, but it will bring you down a few degrees to run to the next tree.

It's not easy to get before summer starts if you start in spring, but the ice fling-o-matic is insanely good for keeping your base from going up in flames (and watering your farms). My first summer my entire base combusted and I ragequit. I didn't play Don't Starve for a couple weeks after that. So try and get a fridge as soon as possible and don't pass up glaciers. Farm them and put the ice in the fridge. The ice won't melt once it's in a fridge.

Summer is much easier once you've gotten a Shadow Manipulator up and can make the cooling amulets from blue gems, but to me it's still more difficult than winter due to the possibility of your base auto combusting.

Good luck.

Oh sheesh, my bad! I agree, I've definitely had many a hot summer day myself by the river with the sun baking that heat into me at 5pm. I just meant to offer some general "rounded" advice about seasons and day/night cycles, since we're not totally sure about the exact locale the DS world exists in.

At first, I had a lot of trouble with summer. I, too, had a base flame up my first summer. It was very disappointing. To protect your base, of course the ice machine is recommended. Note that many different items can be used to refull it; some more than others. However, even in winter you can prepare your base for summer. I am trying firewalls so that not all one resource completly goes if something happens to catch fire.

Tip: Use the pichfork to layout your base so you can visualize it.

Also know that you can put things out by hand.

Managing heat can be tricky. Have 15 to 20 nitres before summer comes. Heat stones can be cooled and given to chester when too hot. Use an umbrella and a hat or wear a floral shirt. It should last most of summer and putting it in the fidge may make it last longer.

I don't know if some of you live in the Sahara to say that in summer the night is "slighty" colder then the day...acutally in the Sahara at night the temperature can reach zero C° or less, so not good example. In winter it's ok to freeze during the day, even if don't live in extremly cold place. But in summer the night is NOT so hot, is way cooler, surely not so hot to starve. In my opinion summer night should be at least enough cool to not lose health, just like in winter daylight you don't lose healt if you wear the right clothes and a long beard.

I was oveheating at night in summer while it was raining, shaved and with a hat.

This guy knows.

Summer is exceptionally brutal, and they could tone the overheating down a bit (it is a bit nonsensical that night gives little/no reprieve from the heat,) but it's manageable if you keep those tips in mind. Tree jumping in summer if you don't have the items to cool off is basically required, even with a straw hat (which you should have). As useless as nitre typically is, having several pieces on hand for an emergency endothermic fire is advised.

Also, as siege said, under no circumstances should you pass up on glaciers to mine if you have a fridge but don't have a stack of ice in it. If you don't have an ice flingomatic come summer, you almost certainly will lose your entire base. It can't be stressed enough that they'll save your base at several points during summer.
