Don't Starve

Don't Starve

Where is the story?
Real rookie here, rookie in DS, DST and even Steam itself.

I have been trying to learn DS/T for a while and I see a lot of story behind the game when I read about it. I see cinematics on YouTube by Klei, story and lore in wiki, etc. But I don't see any of that in the game! There is only the "Play" button, and bam! I'm in a world to survive, and the only thing I get with respect to the story is the greeting from Maxwell. No cinematics, no intro, nothing. I mean, if I haven't searched internet for the game and just played the game, I would have no idea about what it is about, significance of characters, etc. Is this normal? What am I missing?

You are right, there is no story in this game. The only question is: For how long can you survive?

Most of Don't Starve's in-game story has been granted to Don't Starve Together, which takes place after DS.

Yeah, it's normal. The most story you'll ever get in solo is the Adventure Mode, started by entering Maxwell's portal somewhere in your world. Everything else is online, like when a trailer had pieces of a QR code that people had to put together. ARG stuff like that.
My guess, it's this way to keep a balance between people who crave more story, and those who couldn't care less.
Hey, and good luck learning the ropes of starvation. Hope you have fun, and stuff.
Okay bye

@Kempshav Yeah, I just saw some guy's video from his 4000 days or something. Kinda discouraging at my level :D

@Dstomp Thanks for the answer! I'm kind of a story person myself. Looks like I have to resort to YouTube to keep up with the DS/T story then. Thanks for the good wishes! Best!

If you're interested in a game with a similar setting and gameplay to this, but being more story oriented, I recommend Darkwood. Fair warning, it is more of a horror game.

You can also just try to play through the adventure mode for Don't Starve yourself, but most of it is just sandbox oriented. And it is difficult unless you know what to do. Always have armor on you!

There is campaign / story mode. You need to find Maxwell's Door in your world and go through 5 worlds. But I must warn this is really tough challenge. Advice it to go for it when you get good at game. It would require all of your survival skills and knowedge of the game to beat it.

the main story for don't starve is: wilson p higsburry builds a machine (this is seen in a trailer and opening animatic for consolee versions)

he enters the constant, the world where maxwell greats us with a nice reminder to find food and that we don't look so good.

shenanigans happen during Adventure mode and we end up at the nightmare throne at some point.

charlie aka darkness shows up gets us of the throne.

maxwell and wilson meet up and construct a new machine wich thanks to charlie's influence becomes the florid posturn or however you spell that. and then Don't Starve together happens. then events are all confusing.

at some point the surviviors find a anchient gateway open that enter the forge from there go to the gorge and then we don't know.

thats basicly the TLDR version of the story there is more but i don't remember all of it of the top of my head.

but yea no story mode of the sort.

Yeah, most of what little story IS in DS is found in character examine-text and adventure mode. Mostly you get comments like Maxwell telling us that the civilization of the ruins fell due to an overuse of nightmare fuel...and that slurtles were distinctly NOT one of his creations...
