Difficulty?
I've read on reviews that this game can be extremely difficult to play (i.e. you die often). Is this true? I know for me, if a game is way too hard it spoils the enjoyment. Can anyone compare the difficulty with another game for me?

Thanks

Read reviews, watch twitch streams or YT vids. Nobody can compare this game to X game, because nobody knows what u played or liked. Be proactive and do your research.

But this is a rogue-lite sandbox craft game. If you don't like permadeath move along. But the death and trail and error mistakes are the most fun. You can't spoil enjoyement with an open mind. If you are the achieve person or want to progress or "beat" a game, you got the wrong mindset. Games are for fun not to "win" anything.

DS can be harder in SW or hamlet, but is easier in RoG. Also bosses got way less hp compared to DST. And touchstones help to revive etc. Also read wiki, if interested in crafting etc

If you want to try it, start with the vaniila version which is easier then reigh of giant, but still pretty hard when you begin, at least for me , it was. I needed the wiki to get the whole picture of the crafting menu, otherwise, you will lose a lots of time scrolling the ingame menu, and this game is a lots of time management.
When i finaly get a clue on the overworld and was doing very good, i decided to go into cave and ruins, and then i suffered a lots...i needed to watch joeshmocoolstuff's video on you tube to handle the ruins correctly.
Now i am a god with full Thulecite gear and i fear nothing.
The game is very addictive, fun but also some kind of mental torture.
Sorry if my english not perfect, i speak french usualy.

expect hundreds of hours of failure before you get to where you easily last 100+ days in the main game and dlcs. As well as beat adventure mode. maybe 500+ hours or more to unlock all characters.

You can always customize the world options to make it easier (But that ruins the fun). Such as turning hounds and giants off makes the game mostly boringly easy. Or make resources too easy to get in mass. However you cannot customize adventure mode.

You can play overpowered mod characters or WX if you want an easier time.

Wendy is a very newbie friendly character, once you unlock her.

If you do get it, one of the first mods to get is a crockpot mod. So you'll learn what makes what food.

For instance knowing you can make meatballs with ice in winter can be the difference between thriving in winter and it being one of the easiest seasons in the game, to dying from starvation.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I may give it a try, I have played games before where it's a permadeath situation but I guess that's what makes you get better at it, not having the peace of mind that you always have a checkpoint if things go awry - it makes you focus harder on the game and means you're not as lazy!

It is also important, if you prefer online multiplayer or solo games. Many people dislike DS, because they feel lonely. Even though that design is intended and adds to the lone survivor challenge. If you have an emergency or danger there is nobody else to save you xD

I like both types, DS for the immersive hardcore survival aspect and i like DST as a social chat app.

lmao ...

PS: About sashie crockpot mod suggestion. Don't get it. Learning cooking and the crockpot minigames is the best part of DS. It is like food gamble and fun and hilarious. Even though if you cook "wrong" stuff or different outcomes. It is like a treasure chest xD
Trust me you can look up guides for bosses and spoil them, if you want and get frustrated by death. But the crockpot is really wonderful to experience yourself ^^
There are like over 50 recipes, and it's really fun to gamble or tinker for new ones once in a while. Besides you don't need all 50 food recipes to survive. It is just a minigame to add flavour ( pun intended ).

Thanks for the advice! Actually I prefer to play solo, for me it's the best experience for a game like this. And I never mod a game until I've played it first so I wouldn't have done that anyway. I mean, besides, nothing can be harder than Dark Souls right?

Personally only the base/rog game makes me feel a little lonely due to so little going on. But in shipwrecked and hamlet so much is always going on. Snakes and stuff from the trees is so common, as well as other distractions like monkeys/pogs.

For me the loneliest feeling game of all is DST, if played solo (shocker). Specially if you don't got a beefy computer so that even caves are locked off to you (No rocklobsters or bunnymen for you).

Character choice can affect loneliness imo. Some characters Wendy/webber/max come with allies. Some other characters keep you so busy managing their negatives or keeping their positives going you don't get much time to think about being lonely.

That is a good point. As warly for example i never feel lonely, because i always plan my next feast. xD
I think wigfrid feels very lonely. Because she isn't afraid of dog waves/bat waves and in DS there is nobody you can give cool helmets to. She should be a full fledge smithereen in DST.
Hope she gets great rework!

Sadly they still didn't implement legit warly into DST. Big shame :c
But i hope wortox will be awesome support for party.

Fair enough. You can always choose not to mitigate flooding in your base, and then you'll have poison mosquitoes to keep you company!

You could give helmets to pigs. Maybe not Bunnymen, though.

Kenshi is a good comparison. But its no harder then RE2, witch you have played it seems.

it's generally difficult especially early on
danrbr Apr 7, 2019 @ 3:16pm
It is pretty difficult in the beginning. I'd recommend customizing the world like this: long days, long summer, lots of carrots, lots of mandrake (cheap hunger, health, puts enemies to sleep, can be cooked into amazing items), more rocks (you will need gold in the beginning, and this allows you set camp pretty much anywhere), more touchstones (they give you re-spawns in case you die), less hound attacks, more beefalo, less beefalo heat. See world customization on the wiki for the icons: https://dontstarve.fandom.com/wiki/World_Customization

These will not make the end game much easier (cave and ruins specially), but the early game will be a lot more enjoyable. I'd avoid making it always day, since you will miss some content this way.

If you don't wanna make late game content harder to get, but still make the game easier, lots of mandrake and more touchstones are the default but easy mode.

There are some great guides on youtube for how to start as well. This is my favorite: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PMjVxvur5s0&t=3s

I've managed to collect a decent amount of resources so far, and I've survived I think around 5 days. Not sure what beefalo is, so I assume that's something I'll meet later on.

What do you mean 'avoid making it always day'?

Anyway I seem to be getting on reasonably well at the moment, have prototyped a lot of stuff and keeping a good fire going at night.
