Who or what is Charlie?

I'm so confused. I know Charlie and Maxwell had something to do with each other in a lifetime or something, but what does she have to do with the darkness?

She's the night monster and in DST she's the one sitting on the shadow throne.

Charlie was Maxwell's assistant that he began to slowly develop a care ( and possibly love ) for, but unfortuanitely for both of them, Maxwell began to dabble with the dark arts and the evil book that he reads, and managed to banish both of them to the world of Don't Starve and the Shadow Creatures.

Maxwell got sent to one place, with the only plausible explanation being Charlie getting sent somewhere more hellish than his, resulting in her somehow 'binding' with the Shadow Creatures or absorbing their power ( As seen in one of the DST Trailers ), and allowing her to release people from, and subsequently sit on, the Shadow Throne and somehow not be trapped, implying she has greater power over the Shadows and the force they wield.

Charlie isn't stronger, just different. Just like Maxwell was a puppet ruler of Don't Starve until he lost most of his powers when he got free from the throne. Many things that you see in Don't Starve world was created by Maxwell. Mending and adding some creatures of his own to Don't Starve.
Shadow Throne doesn't have any effect on Charlie probably because she became more or less shadow creature herself
