Don't Starve

So what exactly should I be doing with walls?
I've seen people make farms and segmented sections with them, should I do this? And if I do will I need a door or fence gate or can I simply scale the walls?

They're still somewhat useful for defense. Some people will also pen beefalo or koalephants in. Enemies that can't find a path to you will attack the walls instead, and that will let you take fewer enemies on at the same time. They will also be funneled into whatever chokepoint you make which can be used to your advantage for traps and such.

I've also used a stone wall enclosure and planted trees around it to make a sort of firewall for hound attacks. Just go inside, light one tree at the entrance, then stand in middle (and hopefully you've made it wide enough not to take heat damage, or else use a blue amulet.)

You can also use ranged weapons over walls, so that's something.

I use walls sometimes, but they are a large resource and time investment.

As someone who's put in hundreds of hours on pc and switch ds, I don't use walls much--I keep combat away from my base as much as possible, especially Giants. They're more relevant in shipwrecked to deal with weather conditions like wind and flooding. The only real reason I can think of to wall off your farms besides aesthetics is to keep the Moose/Goose babies out, and you can avoid making base where they'll spawn easily if you know what to look for. You *can* use walls to trap beefalo/koalafants to farm for poop, but you can't get too far from them. As far as I'm concerned, they're aesthetic. Also you can't climb walls, and gates/fences are Together exclusive. In solo ds, you'd have to leave a one block gap to walk through.

Walls are in game so you have something to rebuild all the time. Happy with your new grass wall you just spent many diays gathering resources for and building? Well dont get used to them cuz first sign of trouble they will either catch fire or get mowed down by giants.

I don't have reign of giants.

First off: get RoG, like right now. It's arguably Vanilla 2.0.

Second off: If you have an opening to your base, you can use walls as a neat decoration. because (most) mobs won't attack it unless they can't get to you. (ex: spiders, giants, etc)
