They're still somewhat useful for defense. Some people will also pen beefalo or koalephants in. Enemies that can't find a path to you will attack the walls instead, and that will let you take fewer enemies on at the same time. They will also be funneled into whatever chokepoint you make which can be used to your advantage for traps and such.
I've also used a stone wall enclosure and planted trees around it to make a sort of firewall for hound attacks. Just go inside, light one tree at the entrance, then stand in middle (and hopefully you've made it wide enough not to take heat damage, or else use a blue amulet.)
You can also use ranged weapons over walls, so that's something.
I use walls sometimes, but they are a large resource and time investment.
Second off: If you have an opening to your base, you can use walls as a neat decoration. because (most) mobs won't attack it unless they can't get to you. (ex: spiders, giants, etc)
