Is magic required?
Hello, i've survived about 55 days now and i'm wondering what 's next?
Do i have to try magic? but i don't know how to handle madness so i'm affraid to use it.

Rocklobster will be your best friends, i always exit cave with 5-6 and wait until friendship is over so they stay close to the entrence, i also go into ruins with 5-6 and again wait until frienship is over, so they stay close to ruins entrence. They will handle hounds wave when you exit cave and will handle deep worm when you enter, use bush hat and lantern to hide, but miner hat to explore, also i always get the krampus sack before going into cave, there is so much thing to carry. I get krampus sack 2 time by legit way, but after i use consol command, because it is a very tedious task. ( 1% drop chance).

You should certainly try to figure out as much as you can.

The only magic i use early on is the ice staff vs dearclop, 4-5 shot freez him, then i drop 8 gun powder at his feet and light it with my torch, kaboum, wait until he is no more on fire and finish him with blow dart or melee weapon.
Most magic items are a trap, like dark sword or night armor, dont use that, log suit and football helmet and tentacle spike or ham bat work best.
Handle your sanity with jerky, so make a bunch or drying rack, i would say at least 4 when you begin, then 16 later on when you want to explore cave and ruins, with 16 big jerky, you can explore cave during 4-5 days without problem. When i explore ruins, i bring like 24 big jerky.
The best items are crafted with the ancient pseudoscience station which is found in ruins. The best items; thulecite armor, magiluminescence, thulecite crown, thulecite club, starcaller staff.
You can also manage your sanity with cooked green shrom or cooked blue shrom, you can use the starcaller staff to cook blue shrom while in ruins, there are plenty of them.

Try not to die in Summer if you have RoG. Especially with bugged Dragonfly that will end you with current teleporting bug

I don't have any DLC active on this game.
Check my last screenshot (day 70), is my camp complete? Nothing is missing?
I have to prepare an expedition to the caves i know

Post your steam screenshots in your thread, if you want tips. Nobody knows which exactly you mean :p

PS: Magic stations are one of the most powerful upgrades in the game, don't be afraid and don't listen to Tassadar.

You can waste alot of time finding ruins and pseudo cracft stations and meanwhile a vet player might have killed alot of giants with magic tech and even conquered other DLC like SW or hamlet already. Aimlessly exploringt caves for ruins can be huge time sink.

Exploring SW or Hamlet temples > old classic DS caves

What are your most powerfull magic upgrade exactly redhead, i am curious, because i played this game many thousands hours and i dont use anything from the shadow manipulator.
Fire staff....useless unless to burned spider nest from distance
Dark sword and nightarmor...sanity drain, you are crazy to use that.
one man band...useless, i much prefer to use carrot or flint to make allied
belt of hunger, useless, there is plenty of food, much better to wear thulecite armor
amulet are also useless, you cannot wear armor with that
pan flute, i dont use that, i much prefer the ice staff to froze either deerclop or ancient guardien
meat effigy, i never make one these, no need for me.
Telelocator staff, useless , i prefer to kill the deerclop insted of sending him away
batbat....uselss for me, i dont need any sanity drain when i fight in ruins

So what are exactly your so powerfull magic items and why ? Because i get everything i want without using any tier 1 or tier 2 magic, exept the ice staff and maybe the night ligh for my base in ruins.
If you are Edgy Rick and still fight with dark sword and night armor, then no need to answer, i know already nobody listen to you, joeshmocoolstuff show exactly its impossible to survive while always beeing insane.

Sorry Tassadar, but that you are already afraid of going insane or feel magic items are "useless" to be insane already shows you got no clue what you are talkin about.
Don't get me wrong play the game as you like even 5000 hours you can still be afraid of insanity.

Ironically you say you are afraid of insanity and seem to die alot to terrorbeaks on the other hand you can craft literally NOTHING with the ancient tab from ruins without nightmare fuel! :Sacked:

But don't preach people, who want to improve and get better at the game with misinformation.
And nope it is not a smart idea to go ruins rushing only with bare fists or spear or spoiled hambats to fend off 5+ terrorbeaks

The magic of DS or DST is to tinker and play the game differently EVERY day. Where is the point in playing a game exactly the same from 1H - 2000H ? Sounds quite boring and redundant don't you think?

No hate, but the magic tab is the most powerful and most neglected. If i need to explain what each item does and why they are helpful / powerful i feel i already waste time in here?

I mean do you guys even play the addons like Hamlet and SW? There are crazy OP items ...

And it is not only for fighting, but also alot of different things and farms. Only creativity is your borders. Ancient tab items are much simpler and less flexible for farms / fun arenas.

Simple examples why ancient tab is redundant:
Let me give you examples. For speed the magilumine amulett got easily replaced by boats / teleports / riding beefalos / coffee / yadayada. And nope people don't want to replace their krampus sacks with silly magilumine. That item is very gimmicky.
The thulecite club is redundant cause u can much faster make cutlass or even iron gear. Yes the dwarf star staff is helpful, but can also be easily replaced by alot of different light sources in all DLCs. The green gem loot is simply to spawn endless thulecite to brag and make thulecite wall mega base, if you are bored.
Lazy explorer is too unflexible and got only 20 uses for teleport -> alot of waste of time to go back to ruins and craft more of those. Lazy forager is only good for 2000 endgame worlds where alot of trash is littered on the ground ( but mods get faster rid of junk for less lag ).
Do i really need to go on why ancient is outdated content?
Why would i want to craft a Pick/axe when i got much more powerful obsidian tools?
Why want thule crowns or armor when there are much more fun bone helm / armor. Obsidian armor or iron gears to tinker?

FYI Thule crown makes you insane, because of the force field aka you get faster insane and die faster to terrorbeaks ( dem so spooky ) -> crown is noob death trap
On the other hand nightmare fuel armor or swords make you slow insane and you can control it perfect by equip / unequip, precise timing.

On the other hand magic tech is still unique and provides alot and alot of opportunities to have fun especially with more content from SW and Hamlet dlcs.

Another reason why just a tiny simple fire staff / ice staff can be very powerful in the mind of smart people:

TL;DR Magic tab is so powerful, because it is easy to craft and very noob friendly and helps afraid beginners to finally manage their sanity or insanity!
Advanced People can much faster speedrun bee queen or fuelweaver with magic tech than waste time in ruins wanting to make thulecite gear.

PS: I get the feeling you never soloed raid bosses or maybe only builder player?
What are your goals or why is all "useless" to you?
PS2: Did you ever challenge yourself for once and survive SW dry season with 100% insanity? I also doubt that ...
PS3: I don't say thulecite gear is absolut useless, but their craft time / value is very very bad. Sure if you cheat or console command thulecite it seems powerful. But if you farm and actually craft them, they are useless for the time required. In the same time span you can accomplish much more and better.

Yea like you said i have absolutly no clue what i am talking about, sorry, i only got 4000 hours in this game, i have a 4400 days base with 6 hundius shootius, 1 chest full of thulecite armor, 1 chest full of thuelecite crown, 1 chest full of thulecite club, i have a fully functional base in ruins where i can survive as long as i want, but i have absolutly no clue at all, i got all this by pure luck. I just clicked here and there randomly and i did all this. And yea i am terribly afraid of going insane, i cant even sleep when i think about it, i shiver in a corner and i am totaly paral;yse in fear. I think you got what i mean troll.

To the thread starter, if you want to look at a real pro at DS, look joeshmocoolstuff video on you tube, look for journey to the center of the earth, you will notice that he never use magic tier 1 or tier 2 item, he go directly from science 1 and 2 to ancient pseudoscience tier 1 and 2, he totaly skip the magic part.

He is already in ruins by day 3 and build a functional base, but he was close to the brink of death because of insanity, you cant do nothing while beeing constantly harras by nightmare creature and you cannot eat nightmare fuel, so his main goal from start is to control sanity, then craft ancient pseudoscience gear, he is the best player i ever saw and many poeple think so. Just look at his video this guys is a god, he even did adventure mod with wes with 1 hp.

^ that and it's a big waste of time when you trying to do other things. Not mention there is no point being insane where you can just go out and kill nightmare creatures in Ruins or wait them all die and drop nightmare fuel.

To Justice, indeed, when you spend some time in ruins, nighmare fuel lie everywhere on the ground around nightmare light or fissure, no need to fight them at all, they all die by themself when nightmare cycle end. Easy fuel. Thanks for your support, the other troll....well, i will ignore him and his post since......now.

From Magic tab I would only craft Ice staff, meat effigy ( only when I run out both of touch stones, which is very rare), ice amulet and that's it. Well maybe Dark sword for boss fights only.

Ancient tab is a lot more usefull, but I still don't really see what item could require a lot of nightmare fuel besides Magiluminescence (for recharging). A nice amulet, but because it takes slot for backpack/armour - I don't really use it that much.

I use magiluminescence as last resort light, i dont wear it all time. Exemple: it is close to night and i hear the hounds coming, i put my magiluminescence on, run to my bunnyhutch ( 7-8 near my base) , then hide under the bush hat, the bunnyman handle the hounds for me at no cost.

Or , it is very good to shave beefalo at night, with the extra speed you can get enough fuel for an entire winter in 1 or 2 night, without wasting any durability on tool.

This make me think about the deconstruction staff, a very good pseudoscience items, in the begining i was farming bunnyman for their puff, but then i realize i could use the deconstruction staff on their hutch and get all the stuff i need to craft them near my base, which is much faster. All i need is a few cooked green shrom to restor my sanity after i use the staff.
