Also since there's no tutorial it's worth noting that you auto attack by holding 'F' it's interupted by movement so holding it down and using WASD to evade attacks is how most people do it. (I assume others do it this way too at least!)
Hounds require 5 hits with a spear to kill them, Blue and Red versions only need 3 and you can safely get 2 hits inbetween each of their attacks 3 if you time it just right, however since you're still pretty new to it all aiming for 2 is probably the better bet!
You can't fight more than 1 or 2 hounds directly, you're just going to get ripped apart. You need some sort of distraction or any way to get only 1 or 2 to attack you so that timing your counterattacks is possible.
Roads increase your movement speed so you can run along them to outrun some hounds and fight the rest. Hounds will sometimes aggro onto other targets instead of you after a while, so if you can survive that long, they might run off to attack some butterflies or beehives. The best strategy is to run by some strong creatures like spiders, pigs, or beefalo to cause enough chaos to make it manageable. Yes, Wendy is a character that can get some help in battle with her sister she summons, but remember Wendy is a weak character with lower health and lower attack damage.
You can also run through a wormhole, but beware they can still hit you as you do the jump-in animation, and they won't despawn, they'll still be waiting for you at the wormhole you jumped through. When you kill hounds, some will drop teeth you can use to make tooth traps when combined with logs and ropes and discovered at an alchemy engine to help with future attacks.
