No Gears?

I've explored all of my map except for a long peninsula populated by a vast number of killer-bee nests. I'm working down it slowly and have killed off 8 of their nests but still see more ahead.

I have not found the clockwork mobs to get gears and have dug up 5 graves so far getting 3 ghosts and some trash, but no gears there either. I'm going into my third winter and haven't been able to make a refrigerator to save food because of this. Are there supposed to be gears in all worlds, or can they be absent totally?

Plain vanilla DS.

Strange world otherwise also. There is a totally separate small island off the edge but unconnected I could only get to via a wormhole. Never seen that before.

The wooden thing with the group of clockworks tends to spawn behind the killer bee peninsula so you may have to get through that to get any gears.

You also don't have to destroy all the killer bee hives. You can just run past them and as long as you don't stop they shouldn't be able to sting you.

Well, I'm up to 14 of the killer-bee hives destroyed now, and the peninsula looks like it's starting to widen out. I'm a bit leery about just running past the ones I am facing now as I'm not too sure there will be room to evade them on the other side. I'll just keep on slow-but-sure.

The funny tower or whatever it is is actually in a grove of wooly trees just before the start of the peninsula.

There is always clockworks near wooden pedistal thing. Most of the time the route to them is blocked by some harsh eviroment. Killerbee field is very often to be in your way to there

It's quite possible to navigate and run pass through entire killerbee biome with out need destroying any nest. But caution and some protection is advised

I finally cleared a path down one side of the peninsula and got to the clockwork mobs so I finally got some gears. Never seen so many killer-bee hives though. I've killed off 16 and after creeping around the edges of the area, I see 13 more at least. Killed off the bishop and rook so now have 4 sets of gears.
