Don't Starve

Best Island location for a base? (Ship-Wrecked)
Finally, a place to call home. I have been enjoying my new favourite character in Don't Starve, Woodlegs.

Very rarely do I find a good place for him, a way to circumvent his terrible sanity issue on land.
I tend to look for mushroom islands, big islands, something close to the Yaarctopus *(if i can ever find him), kelp forrest (for california rolls) or a PIg island. Though typically I tend to have issues before I really find a good place (around day 10)

This game however, I was super lucky to find a super spyglass, and just happened to see the tail end of the Yaarctopus, which led me to find a nearby med/big island 1/3 jungle, and 2/3 swamp. Infested with Merms, and a couple of spider nests, I've been clearing away the merms, leaving just the fishermen, and OMG. Never have I had so many Surf'n'Turf meals every day. I've also traded with the Yaarctopus and have stockpiled 4 spyglasses (along with some sails and a lantern) in preperation for Monsoon Season, where I can safely leave the protective area of my lightning rods.... and hopefully not run into that frustruating Sealnado >:( (I've only killed that thing in the daytime, but 9/10 it comes in the dead of a LONG night, during a storm, so lightning, burning anything, wind gusts, fading light, etc etc etc, make that fight my last (usually)

So, What kind of Islands do YOU look for? for a certain character/playstyle? or a catch all island that fits all your characters needs?

The more biomes it has, the better. Of course, these biomes have priority.
Mangrove and Magma Field(especially with tallbird nests) Biomes are preferable.

Jungle island for good sources of tree and bamboo - since these resources I need a lot for crafting, fire, sails and cloth for sandbags. I usually looking for big size islands where I can put spider dens, but not too close and more space when floading happens.

Idealy would be Jungle+Mangrove biome island and the island must be big

I have never really found the appeal or use of a mangrove biome yet. I'll have to explore its possibilities.

I like tallbirds, but a magmafield? Last thing I want is for another burning item to get blown into my grass field during a storm :(

I like and prefer a bit of Jungle myself. but it can easily be transplanted over, as for sandbags, i find the sand is more irritating to get, and once teh island is made of man made wood, flooding doesnt really happen

Large Islands I really agree with, since I prefer to have designated areas for different things, ESPECIALLY: a large empty area to dodge and survive Dragoon Eggs during Dry Season

Mangrove biome consist of mangro trees that regrow by themselfes. You get wood and twigs out of these trees. In Mangrove biome there is a lot of grass that if I'm not mistaking don't wither during dry season. Also there is chance of water beefalo where you can easily collect poop or use them to agroo on sharks.

I will set up a mini base early on before setting up a real base.

Priority:

Seaworthy: Makes it easier to travel to ROG. Something you can't move.
Size: I'd like for it to be top 3 biggest island on the map if possible. Doesn't have to be the biggest just big enough.
Center of Map: Just makes it easier to travel.

Luckily for me, I found the seaworthy and it was 3rd biggest island and it's very center to the map. Not sure if it's always like that. If the seaworthy is on a small island, then maybe consider a big island close to it. I can get tons of logs and poop from ROG. Bamboo you can always dig up. I like multiple biomes, especially magma --- plant lure plants and it won't grow eyelets there. You can harvest leafy meat often.

Why everyone keep talking about leafy meat farms? All what you get from them is half spoiled/digested leafy meat that can't even be used in crockpot recipes! Don't understand how it's usefull. I personaly use lure plants to defend myself against hounds

They're not half spoiled if you harvest them regularly around every 2-3 days. Once you cook them, they aren't as spoiled and you can just eat as many as you can right away. You risk nothing as opposed to trying to get monster meat and using birdcage to make eggs to make meatballs. Sure it's easy to get monster meat in SW, just put on a particulate purifier and kill all the stink rays since they do not do damage but it does wear your boat to get to them as well as wearing down your weapon. Harvesting leafy meat doesn't even require a weapon.

Lure plants for hounds? What about the red fire hounds that can burn it? I use lure plants for killer bee hives. Plant one right next to the killer bee hive, when you go near they come out and the eyelets eat the bees. Destroy the lure plant and collect stingers for boat repair kit, honey, morsels/small fish meat (crabbits/birds).

You can even give your caged bird leafy meat and it will give you an egg. It can even be used to befriend pigs and traded to the pig king for gold.

@Justice

I didn't really appreciate mangroves, since I'd rather have pigs help me harvest 100+ logs in a morning, then sail out in the water and get twigs and logs.
Pigs also can give me so much manure faster then water beefalo, but that's a preference in playstyle, as for them giving protection, I tend to just fight myself and not stick around ornary beasts.

@Trumps

I have not gone to or from either ROG to /from SW, so I've never really prioritized the seaworthy, Big island I definetly agree on, and while it eats up sanity, the Veils of mist basically make every point on the map, the "Center" of the map.
And what's the (pardon the pun) lure* behind the leafy meat? it looks like they only heal as much as a jellyfish (something I can get very easy), and does not do much for health or sanity. + how long does it take you to multiply their numbers enough to sustain your hunger? *(you need roughly 4 a day to sustain a normal hungry character)

Lately, I've been choosing what to do, based on accomodating my particular favourite character, Woodlegs.
Keeping health and hunger up are very easy on almost any island, its his sanity that really influences where I choose to have a main base.
Are all these suggestions for *ANY* character? or your prefered character?

I just had a new game and found lots of mangroves, a giant island with pigs, a giant island with spiders, a giant island with merms, a tallbird island, baggims, 2 touchstones, all by day 4. super lucky. but which island to inhabit? (This time I chose the merm island due to fish sorta fixing Woodlegs' Sanity issue for me :/)

But sometimes its SO hard to pick.

But all the loot that Lure plants took will be destroyed except for 1 leafy meat / meat that it ate. So I still don't see the point.
As for red hounds... yeah that's price I have to pay. Put lure plants further away from each other so no more than 1 get burned. And sometimes they survive the burning thus can be used in future. New Lure plants spawns and I collect them and put them back to frontline

i use 3-4 islands,, 1 is my main base, 2-3 others are foraging area's,with some basic camp site on them nothing fancy

for those that don't understand the POWER !! of meaty leaf (AKA lure plant farming),, here is a screen shot

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=448219605

you need to place wooden flooring,or rock turf/volcano,, anny turf that don't naturely spawn the eye bulbs
why ?? if the eye's spawn they attack each other, and every time the (meat) retracts
what do you get ?? every 2 days !! you get a meaty leaf to harvest (don't use u tool in your hand)
jes its stale meat,, but the power is you can cook it and give to the birdcage for eggs !!!
in chipwrecked the y spawn more then in ROG, but even i after spending 300 days in ROG and SW combined was able to transport to a other world and set up a large meat bulb farm :))
its great,, :)
