Don't Starve

Consequences of having no Night?
I am playing the original Don't Starve game, and I never survive more than a few days using default settings. I've never gotten close to even seeing Winter, let alone surviving it. The game's not much fun and I rarely even attempt to play it, for this reason.... but here I am, still trying to find enjoyment in it.

Examining the settings, I see we can change the World to "Day Only". Is there anything that happens at night that is important? Mushrooms won't change their color? Is that it? So is this World setting basically "Easy Mode" for this game? Or perhaps its similar to "Peaceful Mode" in Minecraft? But I'd still have to deal with Beefalos in heat and pigs turning into werewolves or something, so I've read?

You would be unable to get glommer and werepigs wouldnt be a thing unless you make a pig into one cause there would be no full moons

it doesnt change anything, night time lowers sanity and you can die without a fire, while setting it to day time just makes its stay day time

P.S. just like the other guy said yeah you cant get glommer and you wont have werepigs

Beefalo won't sleep, so you'll need a pan flute or sleepytime stories if you want to shave them in bulk, or just some sleep darts to shave one. Finding & catching fireflies won't be easy. And you can only get blue mushrooms with a shovel, since they won't even turn into mushtrees during the full moon.

Okay, this is great advice, thanks. So it sounds like Beefalo hair is important for wintertime, but are there other ways to survive without it? And how bad is not being able to get this "Glommer"? Basically, I need to know before I begin if I'm making a terrible mistake, or if it might be the best way to learn this game without dying over and over and over every 3 days. I'm sick of doing that. I want an easy mode that doesn't cripple my game experience. Is there a better way or should I give it a go and will I finally get to play Winter season at long last if I turn off the nighttime?

You should do it. This game has a HIGH learning curve. When I began I got tired of wasting fuel all night so I turned off night. It allowed me to survive and learn certain aspects of the game. Obviously I found out I couldn't get fireflies to make a miner hat, glommer etc but overall it was worth it. When I turned off night and winter, it really helped me survive. Just learning recipes, remembering what helps with sanity, what helps with health..there's so much.

Don't be afraid to use mods to help make the game easier for yourself. It's better to survive on easy mode (with mods and taking out hard aspects of the game like night) than to keep dying and getting frustrated since there is so much you don't know. When you are ready delete the world as it was temporary practice and include nights/winters maybe on short --- gradually you'll work your way up to very few mods and regular world settings. Use wiki as your guide as well.

Even when you have the knowledge, you'll learn and find ways to do things faster and more efficient. If you keep dying over and over, I don't think you will learn much because the game is too hard for most beginners.

TUrning off all chalenge in the game isnt worth it. I used to not be able to get past day 10 because of starvation, and tree gardiens but as you learn you get better and better and it gets easier. (Untill you get to winter then your screwed if you arent already prepaired) So all toether I would sugest doing this for a short time then going back to normal because the game will bemuch less fun without a chalange and will lose exitment and tention.

I feel that Night and Winter in particular are jolts to the core game play (Summer and Spring as well, but to lesser extents).

The purpose of playing the game is to have the tools and supplies to continue surviving. A torch or a fire is of so much importance that you literally can not survive without having some form of contingency. Similarly, winter will break you again and again if you don't have preparations for it.

I agree with Mature423, the game does have a high learning curve. Ultimately, you should do what is fun for you. But I find it akin to turning on 'God-Mode' in Doom. Eventually, if you take away the threat, the risk of losing starts to sour and the game becomes less enjoyable, overall.

If you want my advice; start each game by trying to gather at least 20 grass and twigs, make an Axe and a Pick Axe and two torches. Find seeds and berries and eat them for food. When night comes along, your two torches will see you through. always make sure you have a torch in your inventory and one for your hand (If it's night, otherwise, two in your inventory). When one goes out, start crafting the second one.

This is a core part of the challenge of the game, If you want to make it a little easier, play with a map revealer mod. Taking the exploration out of the equation gives you an easy 5 days to work with in the beginning and works wonders for learning to play and plan out what your priorities are.

I agree with Doctor Script but would also like to add that by taking nights away, you might (high chance) learn some bad practices. And the next time you'll play normally, no god mode on, you won't be any better either.

Yeah I turned off nights and winter, and it still only took me 3 days to die. LOL I couldn't resist picking up that bird egg when I found it, and via that unfortunate act, I then leaned that the big bird that chases you basically won't stop until he finally succeeds in killing you. LOL

I appreciate all the great advice, thanks to everybody, but clearly this is not the game for me and I'm not gonna fight it, I'm just gonna give in to it and quit for good (i.e. uninstall).

It's a nice game, its a game I'd like to succeed at and have fun at, but at a certain point you just realize it's better not to bang your head into that wall one more time. LOL Enjoy!

Alizona, c'mon, if you like the game, play the game. We have all been there, dying for stupid reasons. It only gets better, trust me. Cheers!

When I was a newb, I got killed by tallbirds two days in a row. Good times.

The only reason I've stopped playing the game is I don't have time, what with 7 college courses.

Are you playing in Reign of Giants? I can't tell by your answer. If not, don't worry about glommer, it is RoG exclusive anyway. Apart from that I see no major issues.

(Just so you know, glommer is a creature that follows you if you hold it's item, the glommer flower, similar to chester. It has very strong sanity gain when you squish up to it, and occasionally poops out glommer goop. Goop's main use early on is very good fire fuel, to be honest. You get the flower from a statue of glommer on a full moon, which is why you can't get it without night. If you kill it and mine the statue you get the blueprint and ingredients to a very powerful weapon, the Old Bell, which is cool but difficult to use well. Overall, it is an interesting and useful creature, but it isn't a huge loss.)
