Also, don't be afraid to help out in nearby melee- you can do a lot more good than standing six feet away and shooting!
As for everything else, if you want to use the manliest of bows, read my shamelessly promoted guide:

If you're in the EU, try joining one of the Sneaky Monkeys servers and if I'm there, I'll happily give you a few more pointers.
Good melee archers just have to get very good- it's either that, or die.
As someone with 3,700 hours spread across a few accounts since this gaem released I can confirm what Baine is saying, and in most cases an archer will get a shot on you before you EVEN REACH THEM in which case they will (almost always) only need one stab from shortsword or saber to finish you (dont forget that x50% damage buff either it is so buggy you often times can two shot a full health van with two stabs to the front of the face.
P.S. This isn't even coming from one of the many melee players constantly whining how much they hate archers, in past months I've played mostly crossbowman myself.
An archer has no distinct advantage over any other class in melee. Each of the others has secondary (or even primary) weapons of a similar speed with greater damage, and they all have higher damage resistance.
And mauls houldn't have an easy time parrying small, fast weapons.
If you want it to be the case that daggers can't parry heavier weapons, then you need to apply the same rule to every weapon.
Pretty soon, the game descends to everybody using maul knight as it's the heaviest weapon and only other mauls can parry it.
There are a few very good archers out there, and. like any other player who's good at a chosen class, they can be tough to deal with.
A good rule to follow is: the closer an archer is to the front line, the better he's likely to be.
You run into the bad, back row archers less frequently, and they're easy to kill. You run into decent, front-line archers more often, and they aren't.
You play almost 8 hours of Chivalry a day, every day, since launch? :O
On a side note, I love how every single 'help with archer please' thread turns into 'OMG archer so OP'. I think two posts before it starts is some kind of record.
Or use the shortbow- it's just as good if you want to get really close. Again, good archers do get close to the action- it's only the bad ones who sit at the edge of the map.
