Was Meltdown heist based on GTA V heist?
I have been recently playing GTA V with my friends and somehow it came to my mind how "The Merryweather Heist" and "Meltdown" are very similiar to each other, despite the fact that Meltdown heist on Payday 2 came two years later after release of GTA V. Both of these heist involve gang robbing private millitary companies (Murkywater and Merryweather) and ending up unknowingly stealing nuclear weapon.

"The Merryweather heist" (GTA V): The trio decided to steal cargo for no one than Trevor himself that Merryweather is keeping away. Heist goes successful until Lester appears and tells the gang that cargo they have stolen is actually a prototype nuclear weapon and how they will end up in deep ♥♥♥♥ with Merryweather and Government should they don't decide to return it back. The gang returns weapon back, much to Trevor's displease.

"Meltdown" (PAYDAY 2): The gang launches assault on Murkywater compound to steal some cargo for our "Upstanding Citizen" Vlad. Upon opening the cargo, the gang discover that they're stealing nuclear warheads. Bain scolds Vlad for not telling them about this, but Vlad resorts that his "buyer" is far away and it probably won't use it. Instead of abandonding it the gang continues with mission anyway.

No one talked about this aside from TV Tropes they have mentioned on article of PAYDAY 2 on "Take That!" section. To quote TV Tropes:

"In the Meltdown heist, after the crew discover that they're stealing nuclear warheads for Vlad, they press on with the mission anyway - a jab at Grand Theft Auto V, where the player characters there chickened out and return the nuke they stole."

So then what you think about that?

EDIT: Don't get me wrong on that I have never said it was a rip off, I just wanted to point out how nobody noticed reference.

EDIT#2: TL, DR Both games involve stealing WMD from private millitary. The difference is that GTA trio return it out of fear, while PAYDAY gang steals it anyway.

It was a shoutout (pun intednded) ,probably

Since it's not a 1:1 rip-off i don't see any problem
Murkywater are mercenaries, not Military soldiers.
Also you rob a warehouse not a pier, like you did in Merryweather.
I think Bain's reaction is universal, but it could be a nice little reference.

About as much as Golden Grin Casino is a ripoff of Ocean's Eleven, I'd say. Some references and similarities but definitely not too extreme.

I have never said about that, I just wanted point out how very few people noticed reference for long time.

Maybe both GTA5 and PD2 are based on something else and not eachother ;)

Oh yeah, I'm not trying to say you're accusing it of being a ripoff.

Or, people knew the reference but it was so banal that they never thought to ever make a thread about it, cos why

Both companies are based on Black Water/The Academy or whatever they are calling themselves ATM...... and apart from stealing some bomb/weapon both heists have not much in common.....
I mean one is blowing up a boat (forgot what the other option was but it wasn't entering a warehouse and shooting ♥♥♥♥) and the PD version is opening a Heatlock (? Is that a thing) and driving the ♥♥♥♥ around with a car. The "jab" with us not getting the loot isn't really a refference, as we don't get any loot for us (apart from cash, I mean we don't get the rifles we steal).
If it really is a refference though, it is probably the revenge to Trevor making fun of the PAYDAY gang (or "The Dark Knight") before the "Blitz Play" Heist ("Atleast we are not wearing Clown Masks")

you know what, mate? i think you might be onto something

They don't really have much in common to be honest. In GTA you destroy a ship so that it looses it's cargo and in Payday you loot a warehouse. It's not even the same loot we are stealing.

If anything, I would say R* was inspired by Payday to create Merryweather. After all, Murkywater and Merryweather are sounding very similar.

TV Tropes is a bunch of crap where people make references and connections that aren't there.

Vlad played some GTA 5. That's how this heist came to be.
