I don't really know about blimp favors, never used them.
What you want to have is a battery on the BFD, because taking care of 3 spots is a pain in the ass, a faster arc for 3 favors and optional water tanks, if you want a less hectic time or you play alone. But they're just quality of life.
The BFD can't break if it has water.
I guess if you have favors left (I think you do) you can get stuff like blimp fuel or so.
Well, technically all favors are quality of life, and I think no matter what you choose, it decreases the time equally, unless it's van escape. But that one is expensive. Of course unless you pick doctor bags or turrets.

Perma choices
Entry plans can also be a key factor for this one as going for a Loud Entry saves you the time, to collect your gears first and also grants you with a free doctorbag and ammobag. Entry with C4 saves you the needs to find the code, with again saves a lot of time but really isn't needed if you are good at team management.
Upgrading the BFD can also be crucial. Using either 2 or 3 favours can decrease the time by 30 or 60 seconds. If you don't have very cooperative teammates then the extra battery might be a safe bet.
Also did you know that you can enter the security room early to hack the Skylights early? So choosing to jam it via the favors is a waste of points.
Summary: He was right, every escape can be easier and faster then the free one. But as my personal opinion, Loud entry with C4 is a waste of favor points.
As an 1500 hour Payday Veteran i pardon you of any Mistakes you did on this Golden Grin run.
I look down on the SMUGNESS Guy the same way he looked down on you.
Alone that you care about understanding and came here looking for improvments is something that sets you above most others i see ingame.
What you have seen is a MetaSheep. These players just came out of the early game and managed to look up a build that they now worship - everything not fitting into the one Meta they looked at is "the wrong way" for them.
Don't worry, i carry these guys every day. They are even worse than noobs, because they never are able to see the own mistakes.
They see a Dodge Player on youtube doing One Down solo, use the same build as that guy and then went to hate on everything else - like armor players like me. They don't understand that just using the same layout as a good player doesn't make them good. And they believe that using other builds means you are bad.
Golden Grin is interessting as a map. Bain tells you about, i think 6, different steps in order. He only tells you about doing the next one when the one before is done.
The best way is actually to do them all at once.
Here comes the GOLDEN RULE OF PAYDAY 2 again: If you don't know the map, play it on NORMAL.
I still do that. With builds that can solo deathwish. The XXV-100 guy plays the map on normal, then joins overkill and sees 0-44s asking what this map is.
For the Preplanning.
The only must have really is the bigger watertanks.
A on board powerunit is nice.
Lowering the cutting time is nice.
Sentrys are a no go and totally useless.
Drill or even Van escape are nice, but most public players fail to carry the bags into the right direction.
Unless you have the Van escape, THROW THE MONEY BAGS UP THE HOLE YOU CAME FROM.
Golden Grin is a well made Loud and Stealth heist, but not something you do every day.
So as long as you keep the BFD cooled, it'll never break, thus tools are pointless. Gotcha. Does that make the water level or the bigger tank/whatever a worthwhile purchase? I mean I've never seen it break before, so I guess probably not?
Blimp upgrades are sounding more and more useless every post, lol. Think I'll ignore it from now on. What about that Bile upgrade to release the Winch faster? Does that make a difference much? I wish you could have Bile drop the stuff through the skylight, not outside in sniperville territory, but eh.
Van sounds extremely popular, so I'll stick with that as a must have, then.
The limo does sound good, it's kinda a buzzkill having to run over to the guitar case each time when you're there to murderise the building, although as mentioned I do like to sneak around a bit first if I can, but not properly - pretty much take as many risks as possibly, not trying to avoid guards merely get in place in advance etc, so as to not waste time. Limo starts in loud, but if it comes with a free doctor bag and ammo bag, that sounds worth using to me, lol.
Battery sounds nice. I was dubious at first, I figured it'd just cause cops to focus down one of them and never leave it alone, but having played with people who don't seem to know what's going on ever and having to protect the BFD and both sockets on my own, from Bulldozers and Cloakers and such, I think having one less to worry about is a good investment.
Thanks for the info about the +2 or +3 favour drill speed thing, 30 seconds or 60 seconds, good amount of time saved there, for the price. Think I'll definitely use that one too.
Limo entry good, Van escape good, Limo entry with C4 bad expensive waste. Gotcha.
Well, thanks for the insight, guys. Anymore you have would be appreciated though, information on any left and such.
Are the sentry turrets worth buying? I have a feeling they'll just be a non-upgraded crappy sentry gun with tiny health and ammo that'll spray all of its bullets at the first enemy it sees, run out and then die within the first minute and then be useless for the rest of the heist. Is that correct?
I appreciate your kind words, man. I bet you have Aced Inspire IRL
All sound good. Bigger water tanks = less time spent not defending, I guess? Less stressy management. Does having bigger water tanks mean they take longer to fill at the sinks, though?
I had a feeling that would be the case. Why's that, though?
Y'know, I never even thought about that. I've carried the bags through to the back and then across the entire casino to the limo and once to the BFD cage once before. What the hell. Mind blown or what.
But I have to disagree with you on water tanks. I did GGC twice without them for achievements. Speedrun and no drill breakdown. No breakdown on DW because I was an idiot.
Water tanks are a quality of life, not a necessity. even solo you have just enough time to refill them before both run out. It is easier to have big tanks, but it is not impossible or even that hard to do it with normal tanks. The battery is a much better upgrade. If you play on high difficulties, you are forced to scatter into 3 groups if you do not use it. And when one player goes down, it's a long way to revive him. With battery you can split into a 2 x 2 party.
Said that just above the quote. You can do it with small tanks without any issues, you just have to refill them ASAP.
The issue with blimp stuff is that with VAn escape, you just do not have enough favors. But if you do other escape, you can get all the quality of time speed-ups.
Bile upgrade only saves time, as most of the favors. I guess it's a minute or so.
And yes, I consider the batter being the best quality of life favor. Unless you have a MLG dodge full speed sonic reviver who can run between 3 spots without going down, you can split up to main socket, and the 2 sockets across the casino. But it's a paoin in the ass on DW+.
Do not buy sentries. Defend the spot with 1 player instead.
They are literally a waste of time as they are not upgraded sentries without front armor. You can't pick them up and without their frontprotection, they will be destroyed before they even run out of ammo.
So uh so far I'm seeing:
Van Escape
Limo Arrival/Crash thing
BFD 60 second reduction
BFD extra battery
Bigger Water Tanks (maybe, if points permit)
That's all you really need, despite the mammoth amount of favours there are? I'm in the middle of a Crimespree so I can't check on Golden Grin at the moment, but would that max out all your favours or end up going over? It feels like it would go over if you took both Van Escape + Limo Crash with the rest, right?
Blimp is a quality of life thing I can live without, for sure.
What about Heartbreaker Annie? I think I noticed objective markers on the briefcases anyway, meaning the RNG that you normally find in Stealth is gone in Loud, so that makes her kinda useless except as +1 civilian present on the map, I guess? lol
When one is empty, you have to get it right away, refill it, and get it back ASAP.
When you get the first one back in the BFD, the other one is close to empty, or if there was a dozer on the way, already is.
This means you have to look after the watertanks at all times. There isn't much room for setbacks.
With the big watertanks there is a lot of time to spend on other things, be it dozers or other goals. If you don't get it right away, because you are helping somebody up, there is no overheating.
Remember that iam someone who carrys low levels on overkill - someone who does most of the goals and has to save his teammates. In this setup, the big watertanks are a must have. If you happen to play with better teammates, this becomes less important.

The Sentry Asset comes with no skillpoint bonuses and can't be reloaded. They shoot for around 20s and kill around 5 cops and then shut down forever.
---
If you use the Cage escape, you have to carry the bags around 10 meters and throw them 2 times.
It is shorter than the van even, but much more dangerus. This many bags in a wide open room will lead to many downs.
It is a good idea that only one guy jumps down, as the guys above have to hold out in a very dangerus spot AND throw a lot of bags up
Anyway. Sure, you are right that they are really good if you play with newbs, but it's a difference between really good and needed in your situation, and an objective necesity.
They are really handy, but not necessary. I did the heist solo on DW with small tanks. It worked.
Loud Entry without C4 is FREEEEEEEEEEEE.
I believe they drain at a speed of 1 min per tank and are refilled in 45 secs. You have a time window of 15 secs, if correctly executed.
That guy must be complete newbie if he pick escape van for loud. Blimp escape is the best for loud even at Death Sentence due to the short distance it take to transport the bag as long as you have basic Transporter. You don't even need to care about the bag being stolen since they would put it pretty close to the blimp escape, helping you do the work more effectively.
The only thing you need to carry it all the way to the blimp escape, is the dentist loot which is too heavy to toss.
