I'd recommend DEI any day. Especially if you want the historical experience.

Make sure all the mods you subscribe to are from the modder Dresden

I would try all of the major mods out and see what you like. Play the vanilla game first so you know what has changed. Radious is the most like vanilla game in terms of mechanics and flavor. Para Bellum is a smooth ride as a mod and has a more realistic feel than Radious. It has some nice features. Then comes the two biggest mods that change almost everything about the game mechanics: Wars of the Gods-Ancient Wars and DEI. WOTG has dozens of sub mods that mold the game into what ever you want it to play like and is fast and furious with lots of battles and wars all over the campaign map. Can be a challenge. DEI is for a slower more build your faction type of experience...but you will be attacked a lot. Not for the faint hearted.

First try all the mods that you are looking into to see which one will fit more with your style.
For me it was DEI all the way, since it feels like the game that Rome 2 should have been all this time

How would you know what what Rome 2 should have been.? ROme 2 with DEI IS still Rome 2. only with trimmings. Rome 2 design and game mechanics and is just wrong headed from the start. Mods for this game are band aids on a corpse.

What do you mean?

DEI with Cultural Tensio submod (get the updated CT version on forums), played for 2-3 weeks straight non-stop with Seubia, had only 5 provinces by then. It's slow/hard but a fun challenge. If you do pick up DEI also get Age of Hellenism sub mod as it properly makes all major greek factions strong, along with Carthage so Rome isn't the only one stomping everyone but still gets big enough to pose a challenge.
