Have you asked your friends what server they are on? Simply pick that server.
Intellect issue perhaps? ;)
Yes! When you press "B" you will see white squares. Those areas indicates other players territories! Stay away from that squares otherwise always check the red messages on the screen that'll tell you why you cant put your territory there. You might too close to a stronghold or inside another players territory. If you follow main questline you will level up properly you can track your quests from your tasks tab.
My friends are all on a different server, and their server is population-locked (I can't join, and they're unwilling to restart on a new server.)
OP was perhaps a bit opaque, but the system for players finding each other could be improved-- and the problem with servers being population-locked was the subject of a recent announcement (news article on Steam.)
It took me about 90 minutes to find some free territory in the first zone to progress along my "journey." But once you get outside the 0-10 zone, there is a lot more free space. The 11-20 zone wasn't what I would consider "ideal real estate" but I'm pretty happy with my spot in the 21-30 zone I'm in now.
The fundamental design issue at play here is that people can put down a base, stop playing, and their base keeps clogging up the initial zone making it difficult for new players to find enough space so that they progress through the first few levels.
I recommend that you move away from the town and the center of the initial zone, look for a secluded spot to do your initial set up. Near a road is best, as eventually you'll get a bike, and a road means less wear and tear on your vehicle and faster travel times.
Then when you get to the next zone, enter build mode and press "Z" to relocate your base from the initial zone to the new zone. Rinse repeat, even relocating within the same zone if you find somewhere better to set up shop.
but not everyone was able to get into cbt and had some issues getting the demo to work. So most gave up.
